Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace, and security.

Egypt has a progressive constitution (2014) recognizing gender equality & non-discrimination guarantees. In March 2015, Egypt launched its strategy for sustainable development ‘Egypt Vision 2030’ (SDS), spanning the economic, social & environmental dimensions of sustainable development, & outlining the broader principles that will guide Egypt in pursuing its developmental goals. Furthermore, cognizant of women’s empowerment being a precondition for inclusive growth, the 2030 National Strategy for Women’s Empowerment (NSWE) was launched & endorsed by the President of Egypt.

The UN Women Egypt Country Office is based in Cairo, and works in the following priority areas:

  • SP Outcome 2: Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance systems;
  • SP Outcome 3: Women have income security, decent work, and economic autonomy;
  • SP Outcome 4: All women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence;
  • SP Outcome 5: Women and Girls contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace and resilience and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and from humanitarian action.

Reporting to the Communication and Advocacy Analyst, the Communications Assistant will support the communications unit in implementing communication and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media, and the public. The work of the communications assistant will contribute to the development objective of raising awareness and outreach on gender equality and women’s empowerment in Egypt.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide support in the management of CO’s digital media presence

  • Develop new and innovative content for digital media platforms;
  • Assist in managing and updating UN Women ECO digital media platforms;
  • Maintain awareness of UN Women’s activities on social media and monitor performance of UN Women’s digital media platforms;
  • Update website on regular basis;
  • Draft web stories in English and Arabic;
  • Maintain files, databases, systems relevant to CO’s digital presence.

2. Provide administrative support to the development of CO communications and advocacy strategy as well as advocacy materials

  • Provide logistical support to advocacy efforts and campaigns by organizing roundtable discussions, press conferences, and other public events and providing inputs to briefing materials and press releases, as necessary;
  • Draft various communications write-ups including, newsletters, press releases, and advisories, as per UN Women’s guidelines;
  • Translate documents from English to Arabic and vice versa, as required;
  • Support in the development of communications products and audio-visual materials.

3. Provide media relations support

  • Coordinate media requests, as delegated;
  • Handle media monitoring process and develop regular media reports;
  • Develop media monitoring reports for special events/activities;
  • Update the media database.

4. Other tasks

  • Participate in inter-gender and communication groups;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

  • Timely delivery quality administrative support;

Required Skills and Experience

Education and certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mass communications, Political Science, Graphic Design, or other related fields.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in providing support to the implementation of Communication and Media strategies or any other relevant field is required;
  • Experience in the use of computers applications & software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc), web-based management systems, and social media & digital communication;
  • Knowledge of design software such as InDesign and Photoshop is an asset;
  • Experience with governmental entities and UN agencies is an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
