Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women’s India Country Office, based in New Delhi, India, works to accelerate the advancement of gender equality and the empowerment of women through the strengthening of strategic partnerships, technical and policy advisory services and advocacy with governmental, inter-governmental and civil society partners. In addition, UN Women CO is charged with leading and coordinating the UN system’s work on gender equality, including through ensuring accountability for results.

Reporting to the Communications Analyst under the overall supervision of the Lead – Communications and Advocacy, the Communications Assistant (Designer), supports the conceptualization and designing of UN Women media products to increase the standing and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media and the public. The Communications Assistant (Designer) promotes a client-oriented approach in UN Women.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide creative/design support in the development of a coherent India CO communications and advocacy material:

  • Planning concepts by studying relevant information and materials;
  • Illustrating concepts by designing examples of art arrangement, size, type size and style and submitting them for approval;
  • Work on a range of projects, using various software programs to visualize and develop innovative graphic designs that meet CO’s communication goals;
  • Obtain input from programme units to ensure that designs meet organizational standards and brand expectations, express ideas accurately, and represent the company;
  • Work independently as well as cooperatively with teams to meet deadlines and schedule project implementation based on workload, which may include five or more simultaneous projects;
  • Translate strategic direction into high-quality design within an established brand identity.

Conceptualize, design and layout of:

  • High-quality innovative, creative and attention-grabbing materials for web-based communications using full-page multimedia tool in English (or similar), and infographics, illustrations (in Hindi and English) for web-based campaign and advocacy;
  • Provide support to design Quarterly newsletters;
  • Provide excellent support in designing brochures and print material;
  • Ensure communications material to highlight achievements of various programs, initiatives and campaigns;
  • Ensure support to various reports and presentations.

Provide support to drive India CO’s social media presence and website:

  • Gather information for the development of content for the India CO’s website hosted at the Regional Office and social media channels;
  • Maintain files, databases, and systems relevant to the India CO’s digital presence;
  • Create digital content in line with the overall communication plan;
  • Ideate and support team with innovative ways to showcase UN Women work on social media/ website.

Facilitate knowledge management and sharing:

  • Contribute to the identification of best practices and lessons learned;
  • Provide/ exchange information with COs/RO.

Other related tasks:

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor;
  • Provide support on special web/digital/media projects undertaken by the India CO.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Completion of secondary education is required;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism is an asset.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in providing design / creative support to the formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and advocacy strategies and related plans;
  • Experience in the use of computers applications and software packages (Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc.) as well as web-based management systems;
  • Experience in the use of social media and digital communication.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Hindi is required;
  • Working knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
