UNICEF in the State of Palestine works to uphold the rights of children to access services and protection, from early childhood through to adolescence. Our objective is to ensure that every child in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, irrespective of background or circumstance, has an equal chance to fulfil their potential.

In the last three years, UNICEF in the State of Palestine has achieved a very high reach and engagement through its social media platforms. UNICEF-SoP would like to build on this and continue engaging with our audience, who are not only seek information but are willing to have important conversations on crucial issues concerning children’s wellbeing and rights. This position will support UNIEF-SoP’s strategic focus to ensure greater presence, understanding, participation and meaningful engagement with our online audiences through the development of high-quality content, research, community moderation and knowledge management.

The incumbent must be a dynamic, multi-functional person, who supports UNICEF with professionalism, dedication, and client orientation, and who must be willing both to work on programmatic/substantive aspects and to provide operational/logistical services

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Head of Section or his/her designated mandated representative(s), and in close collaboration with all programme sections, the youth UN Volunteer Communications Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

• Assist in producing high-quality communication documents in Arabic, and English. • Research and draft communication materials (articles, press releases, human interest stories, factsheets and others) for both traditional and modern media for advocacy, social mobilization and resource mobilization activities. • Research UNICEF projects, activities, advocacy and communication priorities, and successes to develop a plan to regularly create high-quality written communication products and publications • Assist in drafting original advocacy and communication products (web articles, blogs, press releases, policy briefs, human interest stories) as required. • Liaise with relevant colleagues at the country office as required, to verify information, conduct interviews, fact-check stories and data and obtain clearances for their respective content. • Collate relevant multimedia (videos, photos and graphics) from UNICEF’s repositories to use with communication and advocacy products. • Support the development and reinforcement of already existing web tools in order to enhance the visibility of UNICEF and its partners. • Contribute to start and scale-up of an interactive communication model that gives young people a voice; • Ensure systematic information updates and propose content for social media platforms (photos, videos, posts and articles); • Support the Communication team in its day-to-day activities, including but not limited to, contributing to outreach through organizing events and setting up activities (meetings and task forces);

  • Around one year of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in communication, print and broadcast media, content writing, interactive digital media, public information, or other relevant programmes; experience with child-focused programming in conflict-affected countries is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization.
  • Excellent technical competence in producing for various media formats (print, web, social media);
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills.
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • One year of experience and background in communications, specifically in writing and editing in the English language
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills in Arabic, and English language, with demonstrated ability for logical and analytical writing as well as ‘de-jargoning’ technical language for a wider audience
  • Strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently within deadlines and under pressure
  • Well organized and structured, good attention for detail
  • Strong drive for results, taking pride in delivering as per expectation in terms of quality and timeliness
  • Experience in conducting interviews for collecting information/case studies is desirable
  • Knowledge and understanding of UNICEF, the child rights agenda and the UN system is desirable
  • Experience working with UNICEF or other development organizations is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging and multicultural environment
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.), familiarity with database management and office technology equipment.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines.

The duty station for the assignment will be Gaza Strip. As is the case for UN staff and partners, the volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. A Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of ILS 2988.92 plus ILS 896.67 as Well-being differential is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents), as well as final repatriation (if applicable) and Exit allowance for satisfactory service.
