UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportuni-ty. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programmes to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every child birth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA places an emphasis on the need to ensure every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.

The Communications Assistant will coordination with Senior Management and National Communication Officer to ensure adequate participation and visibility of UNFPA in key UN processes and within the relevant stakeholders.

Under the direct supervision of National Communications Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Write stories, briefing notes, concept notes, talking points and content for the online media, in English • Assist in managing the UNFPA Bangladesh website, ensuring the website is updated regularly with new content (minimum four updates per month) and monitor traffic to the website both in English and Bangla • Assist in managing UNFPA social media channels, ensuring they are updated regularly (minimum two updates per week and as per SiS requirements) and monitor traffic, aiming for increased user interaction • Develop communication materials including infographics, human interest stories, case studies and report writing for the national and international media and on-line media
• Produce materials that can be used in social media format including graphic designs • Coordinate capacity building and information sharing with national and international media on UNFPA relevant issues in cooperation with the National Communication Officer • In coordination with Senior Management and National Communication Officer, ensure adequate participation and visibility of UNFPA in key UN processes

• Efficiency in preparing and managing project documents • Writing skills, with experience in writing professional scripts and speeches, stories, feature articles and content for the on-line media • Excellent communication and presentation skills including graphics design skills • Proficiency in computer applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint and Acrobat/photoshop) • Photography/videography skills

Dhaka is the centre of political, cultural and economic life in Bangladesh. Although its urban infrastructure is the most developed in the country, Dhaka suffers from urban problems such as pollution, lack of public transport and overpopulation. In recent decades, Dhaka has seen modernization of services, communications and public works. The city is attracting large foreign investments and greater volumes of commerce and trade. It is also experiencing an increasing influx of people from across the nation; this has reportedly made Dhaka one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Historically, Bangladesh has been a safe country for internationals. While Dhaka is not categorized as a hardship station and a cessation of incidents is expected to lead to relaxation of security measures, the volunteer should be prepared for limitations in freedom of movement on foot, by public transport, and to certain locations.
