Background Information - Job-specific

The Senior Advisor for Small Island Developing States in the Executive Office of UNOPS assists the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) with the development of the next 10-year agenda to be adopted at the 4th International Conference for SIDS (SIDS#4) in Antigua and Barbuda in 2024.

The agenda must be extensively consulted with all Member States of the United Nations including the development partners who have traditionally supported SIDS in addressing their inherent vulnerabilities and building resilience.

To ensure the draft agenda reflects all positions of SIDS and the international development cooperation community, a thorough analysis of past, current and projected engagements of the latter is required to be conducted within the next few months preceding the SIDS#4. While SIDS share multiple features and challenges, their state of development varies within and across the three regions: the Caribbean, the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS) and the Pacific.

The Communications and Partnerships Intern will work with and report to the Senior Advisor for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) based in New York. S/he will support the Senior Advisor by conducting research on donors and market trends to inform the development of the next 10-year Agenda to be adopted in 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda in the 4th International Conference for SIDS.

The Intern will focus on the Caribbean, Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea and the Pacific SIDS.

The internship is a learning and working opportunity that targets fresh graduates. The intern will assist the Senior Advisor for SIDS to prepare a roadmap for donor engagement in the lead up to the 4th International Conference for SIDS and the follow-up implementation. The intern will be exposed to practical learning and working experiences that foster development of his / her path. The Intern will work full time, home based and in the New York UNOPS office and follow the same working hours as UNOPS employees.

Functional Responsibilities

The intern will have an opportunity to have on the job training and will be working on the below listed tasks:

Business intelligence:

  • Conduct analysis and mapping of challenges hindering development progress as reflected in the Voluntary National Reviews and relevant to UNOPS’ mandate
  • Map donor current and prospective priorities, areas of focus and geographical presence in support of SIDS.
  • Research events, publications, and announcements, to track and screen opportunities for possible UNOPS interventions and identify trends that will drive partnership opportunities.

Communications:

  • Support UNOPS SIDS Senior Advisor in the preparation of external communication materials, including factsheets, articles, infographics, videos and other materials, customized for target key audiences such as governments, UN agencies, foundations, NGOs, civil society, private sector and development partners for effective outreach in the regional and interregional preparatory process for SIDS#4.
  • Assist with social media content management.
  • Develop contents, presentations, correspondence, briefings, talking points and all other external communication material linked to UNOPS’ engagement with SIDS in the preparatory process of SIDS#4.

Partnerships and project development:

  • Support the UNOPS’s efforts in liaising with potential donors, funding partners, agencies, and institutions involved in the preparatory process for SIDS#4.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required, preferably in Business Administration, Statistics and Data Analysis, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or related fields.
  • Applicants should have graduated from the above-stated fields within three (3) years prior to the date of the application for the internship.

Work experience:

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
  • Skills in researching, writing and editing content that is clear, concise and effectively conveying key messages to target audiences is an asset.
  • Detail focused and ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline oriented environment is an advantage.

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English (reading, written, spoken) is required.
  • Fluency in Spanish (reading, written, spoken) would be an advantage.

Skills:

  • Marketing, organizational communications and IT.
  • Knowledge of software packages for publication such as Adobe Creative Suite – especially InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro or other relevant products commonly used is an added advantage.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions.

Terms and Conditions
