UNDP has been supporting the Nepalese people in their struggle against poverty since it opened an in-country office in 1963. Much of this support has gone to building up the capacity of government agencies, civil society and community groups to fight poverty, and to bringing these groups and Nepal's donors together to design and implement successful poverty alleviation projects.

Under its new Country Programme (2023-2027), UNDP’s work in Nepal focuses on developing the capacity of government agencies (federal, provincial, and local level), civil society and community groups to jointly pursue development activities to foster sustainable and inclusive economic transformation, enhance people’s participation and inclusion in governance in the context of federalism, and promote environmental sustainability and resilience to climate change and natural hazards.

To support the implementation of its Country Programme, UNDP Nepal has developed a Partnerships and Communications Strategy and Action Plan. The main objective of the strategy is to support UNDP Nepal to deliver its planned results, including through positioning of UNDP as a partner of choice in advancing sustainable and inclusive development, supporting strategic communications for enhanced partnerships, and ensuring adequate visibility for the work of UNDP and its partners.

This United Nations Volunteer (UNV) assignment is part of UNDP Nepal’s efforts to strengthen its overall communications and partnerships efforts, as outlined in the dedicated Strategy and Action Plan. The UNV will provide support to enhanced development communications, knowledge management, intelligence gathering and analysis, and partners’ outreach

The Communications and Partnership Assistant will be engaged with UNDP Nepal to support the implementation of its Communications and Partnerships Strategy and Action Plan, including with responsibility for the following tasks, grouped into two overall areas of work.

Under the direct supervision of Head of Communications, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Support UNDP Nepal’s communications and partnerships initiatives, including by: o Assisting the UNDP Nepal communications team to increase visibility of the UNDP’s projects and programmes; o Drafting success stories (human interest stories) and other communications products for distribution to external audiences; o Drafting of posts and regular updates of the social media accounts. o Supporting drafting, layout, and finalization of UNDP Nepal knowledge products, project briefs and updates for outreach to partners; o Drafting blogs comprising of UNDP success stories; • Support in UNDP Nepal’s History Project, by: o Carry out historical research and collect/archive/organize documents. o Support in preparing an interactive historical timeline with key milestones achieved by UNDP in the past five/six decades. o Identify key informants who worked with or led UNDP at different times over the past decades. o Conduct interviews with key informants. o Regularly gather and analyze information regarding the history project. o Co-ordinate with authors and other relevant parties for content. o Support in compiling content received from various parties involved in the project. o Support drafting, layout, and finalization of UNDP Nepal’s history project. o Support in drafting a book using the narrative collected from the interviews and historical documents. o Support in publishing the UNDP History book. • Support UNDP Nepal’s internal knowledge management practices, including by: o Supporting improvements to UNDP Nepal’s internal knowledge management platforms and practices. o Regularly gathering and analysing information from UNDP Nepal’s pro-grammes and projects for internal awareness and external communications. • Support other/ad hoc activities as seen relevant and needed.

In Kathmandu, comfortable inexpensive flats (furnished and unfurnished) are available. Both imported and local food and clothing are abundantly available. There is a short supply of water, and it is not safe to drink without treatment. Public transport is easily available and generally reliable. Kathmandu has a temperate climate with coldest temperature reaching just above zero at the night during the winter and mild but humid during the monsoon period, mid-June to end September.
