Duties and Responsibilities

The newly created "Youth Leader Fund for a World without Nuclear Weapons" aims to equip the leaders of the future with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to join global efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons. It is an innovative training program by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), made possible by the financial contribution of the government of Japan, for young people between 18 and 29 years old.

Participants will receive training in the general principles of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control through online courses. A selected cohort will also participate in a week-long, in-person study tour to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Future leaders will exchange ideas with disarmament experts from think tanks, civil society organizations, media, and the diplomatic field, developing practical know-how to engage with and contribute to issues related to nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control.

Through the program, participants will learn firsthand about the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons use and the lessons that the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, called Hibakusha, have long been sharing with the world about the unimaginable suffering caused by nuclear weapons. As the Hibakusha continue to age, it is vital that their powerful stories and appeals to eliminate nuclear weapons are carried forward by the future generation.

Following the 2023–2024 inaugural training program under the Youth Leader Fund, three more rounds of similar training will be conducted, generating a positive ripple effect and consolidating a worldwide network of talented future leaders with the shared goal of saving humanity from nuclear weapons. Through education, skills training, mentoring, and other support, the hope is that participants will continue their disarmament, peace, and security work in their field of interest and expertise after the program.

In support of the Youth Leader Fund for a World without Nuclear Weapons program, the Office for Disarmament Affairs is seeking the services of a Communications and Outreach Consultant who will be responsible for:

a) Designing and implementing the communications and outreach strategy of the program, raising awareness of its activities, including driving applications for each of the program’s phases, and disseminating its outcomes;

b) Raising awareness of the need for nuclear disarmament and the importance of the role of young people in that regard, and stimulating young people’s interest in the vital link between disarmament and other themes.
