Result of Service

The objective of the contract is to support UNEP in implementing action plan resulting from the recommendations stemming from the Independent Review of UNEP's Contributions to Poverty Reduction to strengthening the integration of the social and economic pillars of sustainable development into the work of UNEP in supporting the implementation of the environmental pillar with a particular focus on the 2030 Agenda principle of Leaving No One Behind (LNOB). Under the overall supervision of the Head of SPU, the Communications and Knowledge Management Specialist will work on disseminating the new guidelines with an explicit focus on poverty reduction and the Agenda 2030 principle of LNOB, implementing the learning strategy by promoting training, knowledge exchange and best practices sharing and starting the roll out of the strategy for integrating the social and economic dimensions of sustainable development into the environment pillar, specifically accounting for poverty reduction in UNEP’s work.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Policy and Programme Division (PPD) is a center of excellence for strategic guidance and programmatic policy for UNEP. PPD enables UNEP’s strategic and programmatic direction, ensuring organization-wide coherence and effectiveness in implementation and continuous improvement. Based on the recommendations and suggested actions from the SIDA Poverty Review on UNEP's Contributions to Poverty Reduction conducted by the UNEP Evaluation Office in 2021, the Individual contractor will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities in close collaboration and consultation with the Policy and Programme Division team and other UNEP divisions and offices. The Communication and Knowledge Management Specialist will be responsible for: 1. Developing knowledge management and sharing products and activities to enable learning on poverty related results-based management and its relationship with environmental sustainability across UNEP and its integration in the formulation of the new Medium Term Strategy (MTS). 2. Implement internal knowledge exchange and training actions on the poverty – environment – sustainable development interlinkages and the application of the Leaving No One Behind principle, including global and regional sub-programme coordinators and project managers who will have an important role to play in the development of capacities, projects and initiatives. 3. Develop new communications products, including guidelines, fact-sheets, brochures and summaries based in the results and products of the action plan derived from the Independent Review of UNEP's Contributions to Poverty Reduction. 4. Disseminate the guidelines and tools to support the incorporation of poverty reduction related objectives and approaches in UNEP’s programming, including those that have been developed as part of the abovementioned action plan and other UNEP initiatives (PEI, TEEB, GEI, PAGE, among others). 5. Organize knowledge sharing activities including for sharing best-practices in integrating poverty reduction in environmental management through Brown-Bag sessions and webinars, among others, and collect lessons learned and recommendations for the MTS formulation. REPORTING LINES The Specialist will report to the Programme Management Officer, Strategic Planning Unit in the Policy and Programme Division.

Qualifications/special skills

A first level degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in social, economic, and environmental science is required. A high school diploma in combination with two additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the first level university degree. A minimum of 5 years of experience working in social issues in the development cooperation field is required. Within the 5 years of required experience, at least 2 years of experience in communications, writing, editing, and producing communications/marketing materials are required. Experience on the use of publishing and creative software is desirable. Working experience in an international organization or the UN system is highly desirable. Experience using Adobe or online platforms for illustration, design, photo editing and video post-production is desirable. Strong practical background in graphic design, including the knowledge of basic design software, such as Canva, is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required.
