This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the UNESCO Education for Health and Well-being (EHW) Team Leader, the UN volunteer will work with regional and national colleagues to deliver on the following tasks:

Communication Strategy

  • Develop a communications and advocacy strategy for the securing of the ESA Commitment beyond 2020;

  • Form linkages with communications personnel in partner organisations (ESA Commitment Technical Coordinating Committee) to strengthen communications;

Communication tools

  • Repackage and popularize the ESA Commitment evaluation report into different products tailored to specific audiences;
  • Develop key messages and compile advocacy tools for use by UNESCO country colleagues
  • Supervise the development, designing, production and distribution of ESA Commitment branding and campaign materials;
  • Prepare ESA communications materials, as relevant for different audiences such as presentations; newsletter, and opinion pieces.

Young People Today

  • Work closely with the UNESCO Digital CSE Officer in the EHW team to re-orient the Young People Today website and social media platform towards advocating for the ESA Commitment beyond 2020;
  • Update and maintain media lists and press contact information;

Media Liaison

  • Monitor and compile press clippings and reports on the ESA Commitment advocacy efforts across the region;
  • Help develop and distribute press releases, programming notes and media alerts
  • Manage ESA Commitment-related communication with key stakeholders including government agencies, UN and RECs;

Technical Support

  • Assist countries with showcasing their advocacy efforts on the ESA Commitment in mainstream and alternative media platforms;
  • Assist in preparing all necessary presentations for team members and partners as required;

  • Provide other communications support leading up to the affirmation of the ESA Commitment in December 2021.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • A minimum of Bachelors’ Degree in, Communications, Public Relations, Events Management or related field; or 5 years additional years of experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree will be considered.

Required experience:

36 Months

Experience remark:

  • 3 years’ experience managing the communications component of a campaign or project is required.
  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively orally. A writing sample will be required as proof.
  • Must be able to tele work and report at UNESCO Johannesburg offices when required

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise details:

  • Previous work in Government, Civil Society and the UN system an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment with full respect for diversity
  • Ability to work under pressure as part of a team
  • Good writing skills, and excellent verbal communication,
  • Ability to manage processes, maintains accurate records, interpret/analyze a wide variety of data, and identify/resolve data discrepancies and activity problems.
  • Highly skilled in maintaining liaison with partners
