In 2019, UNDP built the world’s largest and fastest learning network on sustainable development challenges, the Accelerator Labs, thanks to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany and the Qatar Fund for Development as founding investors, and support from Italy and UNDP core donors. There are 90+ labs around the world situated within UNDP country offices, bringing skills and methods that are relatively new and unusual to the development sector, such as prototyping, citizen generated data, artificial intelligence and machine learning, mapping local solutions, exploring trends and signals, and more. The Accelerator Labs are designed to test a new model of working that contributes to decreasing the gap between the current practices of international development and the uncertain, complex challenges that the world is facing. To read more about the Labs’ network, please refer to https://acceleratorlabs.undp.org/.

UNDP Jordan is one of the country offices that hosts an Accelerator Lab. The Accelerator Lab’s main functions are exploration (finding existing data on the focus areas, looking for new sources of data, data analysis, identifying trends and signals, etc.), solutions mapping (finding people or grassroots groups who are working on potential solutions to the challenges, evaluating them, and identifying which ones are promising, designing and running co-creation sessions, mapping stories, etc.) and experimentation (designing a set of interrelated experiments for the potential solutions, evaluating the experiments, extracting learnings, etc.). This year, the Jordan Accelerator Lab is working on tourism and work/self-reliance in Madaba governorate, a focus that emerged after listening to the perspectives of various stakeholders on Jordan’s main challenges and a request from Madaba Municipality to UNDP for help on improving tourism in Madaba governorate. Currently, the Lab is in the exploration and solutions mapping phase.

Amman, the capital, is a peaceful city with over four million residents. People are friendly to visitors. Services in terms of banking, transportation, health and communications are easily available. Though Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken among the majority of the population, especially in Amman. Road network is good both in terms of spread and quality of the roads. Public transportation in Amman is limited. Taxis are relatively cheap and easily available. There are a number of shopping malls, restaurants, gyms, and cinemas. A large variety of accommodation options can be found; however, it is worth noting that prices in Amman have generally increased in the past few years. There are no specific security threats. Amman is a very easy city in which to live; large, many amenities, very modern and serviced by an international airport with direct flights to most capital cities.
