Note: "****Ideally, this position will be based in New York****. However, the position has the option for a fully remote work modality. This will be determined based on the preferred candidate's location and availability to relocate. In support of UNICEF’s Strategic Plan, the Education Section works to advance access, participation and learning outcomes for marginalised children through policy leadership and support to countries for excellence in programming. Improving Learning is the overarching programme priority, particularly in light of UNICEF’s new Education strategy, which seeks to accelerate progress towards addressing the learning crisis.

For every child, education……

Under the supervision of Sr. Education Advisor (Management) #86249, and in close collaboration with the Director, thematic area Team Leaders, DGCA, regional and country offices, the Communications & Knowledge Management Specialist will initiate, conceptualize, develop and/or implement communication and knowledge management initiatives.

How can you make a difference?

General Communications and Advocacy

  • Develop and implement Communications & Advocacy Plan, including audience-specific engagement plans to amplify UNICEF’s value-added, to secure more resources and to influence change.
  • Produce innovative advocacy and visibility initiatives (exhibitions, installations, virtual reality visits, podcasts) and key multimedia and promotional materials.
  • Support generation and/or re-purposing of knowledge products, communications and advocacy material, to specific audiences.
  • Coordinate and support development of blogs, Op-Eds, newsletters, case studies, human interest stories, academic journals, etc. in support of technical leads.
  • Provide guidance and support on UNICEF branding, production and publishing policies and processes.

Resource mobilization and donor engagement

  • Prepare and implement targeted communications and advocacy interventions that support resource mobilization ambitions.
  • Support the preparation of briefing notes and resource mobilization products as necessary.

    Strategic Social Media engagement

  • Manage social media engagement, including amplification through key senior management handles, regional and country offices and Natcoms.

  • Draft social media messages and engage donors and partners around key priorities/events.
  • Develop event-specific social media packages with a distribution strategy to amplify key messages.
  • Work in close collaboration with colleagues on donor visibility and donor engagement via social media channels.

Major events

  • Keep track of key global events/advocacy opportunities to inform and follow-up with colleagues and partners.
  • Support design and delivery of virtual, in person and hybrid events focused on key priorities.
  • Support Partner Group meetings and visits, as applicable.

    Knowledge Management Effectiveness

  • Provide technical inputs for the ongoing definition and support of knowledge management requirements.

  • Design, develop, continually refine and maintain products/instruments for identifying, generating, sorting, retrieving, validating, sharing and disseminating information in a more efficient and effective manner.
  • Proactively seek new ways to share and broker knowledge and best practice internally and externally.
  • Align internal and external content/platforms on Teams/intranet/internet sites, keeping pace with organizational and section-wide reform.

Support to Programme Group Knowledge Management Work

  • Represent the Section and contribute to the outputs and activities of the Knowledge Management Working Group in Programme Group.
  • Lead quarterly regional calls to discuss discuss and capture regional events and resources.
  • Engage in division-wide roll-out of corporate Knowledge Management initiatives.
  • Stay up to date with emerging evidence and innovations being tested within the portfolio and seek opportunities to promote these throughout the organization.
  • Maintain a comprehensive database of reports, good practices, lessons, policy and programme innovations for internal dissemination.
  • Ensure research findings are communicated to UNICEF and other development partners, so as to strengthen evidence-based programming.
  • Provide high-quality resources and information and by ensuring priority messages on education are effectively and consistently communicated.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree) in one of the following fields is required: Communications, Knowledge/Information Management, Social Sciences or another relevant technical field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 (five) years of relevant professional work experience, at the national/and or international level in the area communications and advocacy, specifically for government policy change and/or resource mobilization is required.
  • Experience with the use of social media for development is desirable.
  • Previous knowledge management experience is desired.
  • Knowledge of Drupal, Adobe Suite and Video Editing/Production is an asset.
  • Understanding the workings of the UN system and some years of employment within the UN system is preferable.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, French or Spanish) is an asset.
