In Mozambique, UNICEF works with Government and partners to deliver programmes that save lives and create the conditions that children need to survive and thrive, in safety and security. UNICEF’s Country Programme of Cooperation with the Government of Mozambique (2022-2026) includes strong focus on northern and central Mozambique, and the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambezia and Sofala. It is important for UNICEF to ensure high levels of visibility around work being carried out in these provinces in order to:

  1. demonstrate to development partners and donors that UNICEF is delivering impact, on the ground, for children, and achieving agreed results with partner funding, including from key partners such as the European Union, and
  2. reinforce UNICEF’s advocacy for children with Government and other partners, showcasing approaches that work and advocating investment of political and financial capital, resulting in scale up of approaches that work.

In addition to duty station specific vaccine requirements, appointments are subject to confirmation of fully vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the appointment. It does not apply to UN Volunteers who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their contracts.

The UNV, who will be based in the UNICEF Mozambique Country Office in Maputo, Mozambique, will report directly to the Chief of Advocacy, Communication and Partnerships (ACP).

The UNV will work with key internal and external stakeholders including team members from ACP Section; technical focal points from programme sections in Maputo, Chiefs of Field Office, and other relevant internal and external stakeholders, to:

• Prepare, edit, copy-edit and prepare layout of written products, including but not limited to human interest stories, web articles, newsletters, advocacy briefs, etc., supporting advocacy and showcasing key results and impact of support from partners, including key partners such as the European Union. • Coordinate and participate in field missions, together with photographers/videographers, as appropriate, to collect human interest content including human interest stories, quotes, etc. • Provide support for country visits and field missions with development partners, including key partners such as the European Union, media outlets, ensuring rigorous planning and organization of missions. • Support planning, logistics and implementation of relevant advocacy, communication and partnership events and activities including workshops, ceremonies, planning sessions, etc. • Provide support for the work of the United Nations Mozambique Communications Group including scheduling of meetings, creation of minutes, identification of follow-up tasks, etc. • Provide support as needed for other advocacy, communication and partnerships functions

• communication, journalism, political science, development studies, social science or other related discipline. • professional work experience in communication, journalism, photography/videography, international development, or other relevant fields; experience with the United Nations or national or international NGOs or development organizations, or other relevant organizations, is an asset.

Mozambique has a total population of about 33 million people and is located on the southeast coast of Africa. To the east is the Indian Ocean while Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia are to the north. To the west is Zimbabwe and South Africa, and to the south, Eswatini and South Africa.

The total area of Mozambique is 799,380 square kilometres. It is tropical, hot and humid. The hottest and wettest months in Maputo are December to February, when the average daily minimum temperatures are around 22°C and the average daily highs of 30°C. The rainy season is between October and April. Winters (June to August) are mild with the average daily temperature ranging from 13°C to 24°C.

Good health care is available for most conditions at international hospitals and clinics located in Maputo, while care for more complex conditions can be found in the city of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit) in South Africa, located approximately four hours by car from Maputo. The security situation is reasonably good, but sensible precautions should be taken to avoid (mostly petty) crime. Communication and transport services are available at various costs.

Regarding accommodation and food, houses and apartments can be rented, starting from approximately US $700 per month, and meals at the restaurant cost between US $10 and US $30. Food, household commodities and clothing can be found in shops and local markets at reasonable prices, and modern shops and supermarkets are available within a number of malls located around the city. Mbombela also has an extensive range of retail options.

An entry visa is required for all travellers and must be obtained from Mozambican Embassy prior to travelling. The metical is the local currency and exchange rate stands at USD 1 equivalent to about 63 meticais (MZM) as per October 2023.

A range of commercial banks are operational in the country and Visa cards are accepted in hotels. Maputo is categorized as a family duty station offering a variety of different accommodation options. It has a vibrant international community whilst also providing excellent opportunities to work in a national, Mozambican context.
