You have:

  • University degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or other relevant qualification.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in designing and implementing communication activities with similar responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
  • Good level of written and spoken French is an asset.

Organizational Settings

The Global Strategy to improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) is a long-term, multi-partner programme hosted by the FAO Statistics Department within the Survey Team. It was developed in 2009 as a blueprint for a coordinated and long-term initiative to address the decline in the agricultural statistical systems of many developing countries The GSARS Programme, which was endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), was designed to provide a framework for national and international statistical systems that would enable developing countries to produce the necessary data in the 21st century. From its very inception, the GSARS was designed as a long-term process to be implemented in 3 phases over 15 years. After the completion of a very successful first phase, during which agricultural statistics methodologies were updated and developed, the programme is now in its second phase with the goal of transferring know-how and designing sustainable agricultural statistical systems at country level. The programme will also serve the objectives of the new 50x2030 Initiative to which the activities of this project will be directly contributing.

The Communication Specialist will lead, coordinate, design and implement the global and in-country communication and advocacy activities as well as support resource mobilization efforts of the GSARS Programme.

Reporting Lines

The consultant will report directly to the GSARS Programme Coordinator and functionally (for all communication and advocacy outputs/products) to the Office for Corporate Communication (OCC).

Technical Focus

Coordination, design and implementation of communication and advocacy activities and support to resource mobilization efforts.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Development of a communication strategy for the GSARS Programme in line with the GSARS Action Plan, donor agreements and guidance from the GSARS Global Steering Committee. • Development and implementation of targeted communication activities of training workshop activities at country level, in collaboration with counterparts from FAO Country Offices and partner organizations; • Preparation of communication and advocacy material (presentations, photo/video material, brochures) for presenting results or in support of resource mobilization targeted at programme stakeholders and potential donors. • Management, maintenance and development of content for the GSARS Programme website; • Organization of the presentation of the GSARS Programme at events and conferences; • Liaison with external service providers or internal units (graphic designers, video producers, editors, printing units while ensuring alignment with corporate policies and standards. • Liaison with the Office of Communication (OCC), either directly or through an agreed focal point/coordinator, to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes.

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or other relevant qualification. • At least 3 years of relevant experience in designing and implementing communication activities with similar responsibilities. • Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish). For PSA, working knowledge (level C) of English is required.
