Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the UNESCO Head of Office and the Communication and Information Focal point, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

The Communication and Information Sector strives to foster freedom of expression, media development, and access to information and knowledge in line with UNESCO’s mandate to “promote the free flow of ideas by word and image”. The Communication Specialist is expected to collaborate with HoO and CI Unit to develop and implement an effective communications strategy with a specific focus on Media and Free expression, rights of media professionals and journalists, Media Information Literacy, Safety of Journalists. This will be carried on in strong support of resource mobilization efforts to accompany launch of new Country Program.

Assist in developing brochures, factsheets, stories from the field to inform media and general public; Write and edit content for publications, press releases, website content, social media content, Annual Report of Activities (Snapshots), Newsletter, first-draft review of speeches, briefings and other marketing material that communicates UNESCO's activities. Ensure gender perspective and youth perspectives are mainstreamed. Ensure consistency and validity of messages.

Assist in the supervision of audio, video/visual material production to promote UNESCO's work

Maintain effective relationships with media professionals, expand existing media professionals database, and identify information opportunities, activities, approaches and platforms and partners;

Maintain records of media coverage of UNESCO and collate analytics and metrics through various mediums, report on weekly basis, and monitor and analyze print and social media and prepare reports

Proficiency in a design software, preferably "InDesign"

Co-handle public relations online, information output, press releases and media requests, social media and/or advertising efforts

Design, develop, and implement communication and outreach/advocacy strategies, including media strategies; ensure gender and youth perspectives;

Integrate outreach and communication into technical proposals and resource mobilization and partnership tools.

Advice on outreach and communication materials and coordinate launching flagship initiatives and publications, and advise on best practices for communication and outreach

Educational additional comments

Master’s degree (or equivalent) preferred, in communications, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required, Bachelor's degree required with a proven track record.

Experience remark

At least 3 years of professional work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy, including in media relations;

Experience in the use of social media;

Experience in production of communication Tools including video documentary skills is an added advantage.

Prerequisites This assignment is funded by the Government of the Republic of Ireland, therefore only the following are eligible to apply: Irish citizen or a European Economic Area national with an unrestricted right to reside in Ireland or have a declaration of refugee status from the Minister for Justice and Law Reform.
