How can you make a difference?

UNICEF Syria's communication section works to communicate and advocate for the most disadvantaged children in Syria and develop a coordinated, consistent, and cutting-edge communication and public advocacy approach to show the situation on the ground, highlight the work the organization, together with partners, is doing and demonstrate the impact it is making.

The purpose of the Communication Officer is to provide support to the communication section to identify, collect and develop compelling communication content and materials linked to the earthquake and other key priorities. Strong focus will be on coordinating social media content production across UNICEF Syria’s platforms; working together with colleagues as well as with professional photographers and videographers and draft written content including captions, quotes, and draft human-interest stories; and supporting the daily media monitoring for the communication section.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • With the supervision of the Chief of Communication and in close contact with the communication focal point for the field office, help to identify, collect, and draft compelling stories and materials linked to the earthquake response and other CO communication priorities.
  • Support the communication section in undertaking communication content collection missions in field locations. Contribute to preparation of human-interest stories that show how UNICEF supported activities have impacted the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Assist in producing the written content by conducting interviews, collecting quotes, and pulling together draft stories, social media content, among others.
  • Coordinate social media content production across UNICEF Syria’s platforms (incl. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) by drafting and disseminating posts, tweets, social media packages and other content that meets that meet UNICEF’s standards.
  • Monitor international, regional, and national media on daily basis through Google alerts, websites and social media for news items and articles linked to UNICEF’s mandate as well as the grave violations against children. Produce and share timely daily updates.
  • Liaise closely with all relevant internal stakeholders to ensure high quality results and appropriateness of country specific communication materials, activities, processes, and messages.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or similar.

    *A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.

  • Minimum two years of practical, professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • Background/familiarity with emergency situations is required.
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) applications working proficiency is required.
  • Proven social media management experience is required. Experience in using Hootsuite or another social media management tool is a strong asset.
  • Field work experience is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of photo and video editing applications is an asset.
  • Proficiency in English and Arabic is required.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions. Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF.
