In The Gambia, UNICEF works with the Government to deliver services for children across the country. Guided by the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF works to ensure every child survives and thrives, and is protected from violence, discrimination and all forms of harmful traditional practices.

Since 1965, we have partnered with the Government of The Gambia to strengthen national laws and policies and empower local communities to deliver better services for women and children. Our interventions are based on our Country Programme, signed with the Government of The Gambia. We implement our programmes in line with the country's National Development Plan, the United Nations Development Assistance Framework, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

How can you make a difference?

The Communications Officer assists in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating an advocacy and communication strategy to get children’s and women’s issues into the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives in the country, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.

Under the supervision of the Partnerships Manager, the Communication Officer will also work closely with programme colleagues to support programme planning, communication, and visibility, and coordinate all public events and engagements in close collaboration with government and partners. He/she will also manage the Country Office’s social media accounts and support the Youth Engagement Officer in advocacy and communication activities targeting engagement with children and adolescents.

Within the delegated authority and the given organizational set-up, the incumbent may be accountable for all or assigned areas of the following major duties and end results:

1. Communication & advocacy products and materials - Ensure that the production of communication products and materials is timely executed and followed up to support country communication strategy, regional and global campaigns and priorities and to support resource mobilization as set out in the work plan.

2. Media relations - Effective and timely professional assistance and support are provided in developing, drafting and maintaining contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, web etc.

3. Donor Visibility and Fundraising Materials - Support with the development and implementation of donor visibility plans and the development of communication materials for resource mobilisation to support the country’s Partnerships & Resource Mobilisation Strategy.

4. Monitoring and evaluation - Regular monitoring and evaluation activities are undertaken according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of country communication efforts. Ensure results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.

5. Celebrities, partners and special events - Ensure that the Country Office’s contact list of individuals, groups, organizations and fora (including Government, UN, and bilateral counterparts), are maintained and further developed, whose support is essential to/can assist in achieving the advocacy and communication objectives and who support and are able to actively participate in special events and activities that further the country programme goals.

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.
  • Work Experience: At least one-year practical professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required.

Desirables:

  • Field work experience is required.
  • Experience working directly with journalists and media outlets, preferably in The Gambia, would be an asset.
  • Experience working with adolescents and youths in a communication content would be an asset.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency.

Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Should you be selected for a position with UNICEF, you either must be inoculated as required or receive a medical exemption from the relevant department of the UN. Otherwise, the selection will be canceled.
