Strategic office context

The Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (GCA) is responsible for helping to shape UNICEF’s external image among global stakeholders. It plays a key role in communicating UNICEF’s stance on policy issues, ensuring that the rights of children and women remain a development priority. The Division is responsible for developing global advocacy, brand and communication strategies, policies and guidance for the organization and for UNICEF’s global reputation and brand management.

Working closely with all GCA sections, all divisions in the headquarters, UNICEF National Committees, and regional and country offices, the Strategic Partnerships Team facilitates institutional events (virtual, hybrid and in-person format) that are communications and advocacy oriented and fall within GCA’s remit and leads on special projects to strengthen positive impact on global public opinion about UNICEF to reinforce our advocacy, communications, and fundraising objectives and to contribute to results of the Strategic Plan. These Terms of Reference describe the role of a Communication Officer specializing in Events and Special Projects with overview of Strategic Partnerships.

Purpose for the job

Under the leadership of the Partnerships Manager of the Strategic Partnerships Team and considering the strategic priority to increase public engagement to UNICEF’s global advocacy priorities and implement the organization’s outreach activities and projects at various levels of the organization, the Communication Officer will be responsible for coordinating and managing various communication events, brand activations, communication partnerships, and other special projects.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks

Reports to the Partnerships Manager whose role is to provide strategic support to the team lead on the identification, exploration and implementation of new partnerships, special projects and institutional events.

The Communication Officer will be responsible for supporting the end-to-end management of a wide variety of event projects across different parts of the organization relating to delivering high quality, high-level events with a highly proactive as well as reactive approach and the ability to build trusted relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders. Responsible for managing the relationship with vendors, providing support on budget, running pre-production & co-ordination meetings, day-of-event coordination and overseeing day-of volunteers.

Support managing and nurturing key partnerships including coordination with internal UNICEF offices, and UN sections and affiliates, as well as key external partnerships.

Provide support to the daily operations of the Strategic Partnerships team, including event & project management, research, logistics and liaising with rostered external partner companies, UNICEF teams, and, on occasion, the United Nations Special Events Unit, to ensure schedules are met.

Under the supervision of the manager, support the coordination with legal, procurement, and finance teams to make sure productions are within legal guardrails, finance policies, and budget management.

Impact of Results

The Communication Officer’s impact is derived from the stakeholder engagement metric developed by GCA as well as other organizational strategic outreach activities and projects. Public activations including events, brand campaigns, and strategic partnerships are vital to UNICEF’s communication and advocacy strategy. The impact of the role also directly affects metrics involving UNICEF’s brand awareness. The Communication Officer is accountable for the achievement of the following (but not limited to) key milestone projects:

  • Support the development and coordination of high-level projects, activations & events related to the Strategic
  • Partnerships team, taking lead on select projects with oversight of core partnerships, including the UN
  • Support on the development, coordination, and management of High-level UNGA events - July - September 2022
  • Support the development, coordination and management of two major NYC-based events (e.g., World Children's Day or similar), March - December 2022
  • Support the development, coordination and management of at least one priority global institutional event and/or activation linked to OED or GCA
  • Tangible support of GCA and other HQ sections in implementing activations, events and projects related to the Strategic Partnerships team - ongoing throughout the duration of the contract.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Advanced degree in international relations, digital communication, media relations, journalism, marketing or a relevant field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in the field of communication, marketing, event production, public relations, and partnership liaison.
  • A track record of producing brand activations, high level events, virtual events, and other communication campaigns using digital and other media
  • Experience in managing, coordinating, fostering relationship with partner organizations, external vendors, and other UN entities
  • Capacity to prioritize and manage a diverse range of partners, projects and activities
  • Understanding of UNICEF public and private engagement models would be an advantage
  • Prior experience working on various programmatic areas relating to children and youth
  • Demonstrated research, planning, communication, and writing skills
  • Experience in UNICEF or another international development organization would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Division Global and Advocacy (NYHQ)

UNICEF ( Division of Global and advocacy ) is currently undergoing organizational changes; therefore, the exact location of the post has yet to be determined. Selected candidates may be required to commence duties remotely until the location is confirmed. If reassigned or relocated to New York, candidates may be expected to relocate to a new location again during the initial contract or assignment period.
