Develop and promote strategic communication and outreach initiatives

You have:

  • Advanced university degree in communication, marketing, social science, journalism, political science, or a related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience in outreach, the coordination of global multilingual campaigns, content production, exhibitions, social marketing, and special events.
  • Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind. The Office of Communications (OCC) is responsible for both external and internal communications of the Organization. It aims at making FAO’s communications strategic, coherent, focused and impactful, while ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in communication-related operations.

The post is located in the Outreach and Advocacy Branch (OCCO), Office of Communications, and based at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines The Communication Officer (Content and Outreach) reports to the Senior Communication Officer, Outreach and Advocacy Branch.

Technical Focus • Communication, outreach, global campaigns.

Key Results Contribute to the development and strengthening of internal communication, web publishing and media-relations activities of the Organization.

Key Functions • Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology-related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support internal and/or external communication. • Produces a variety of information and reports as well as input for communication-related documents and web pages. • Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases. • Participates in multidisciplinary teams and/or leads working groups/teams; collaborates with other offices and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices. • Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations. • Provides information and advice to management and staff.

Specific Functions • Supports the development of corporate outreach plans, in coordination with FAO divisions and Regional/Country Offices, to enhance FAO's brand among the Organization's external audiences. • Conceptualizes, implements and promotes global marketing campaigns (World Food Day, International Days, International Years, UN Decades) that are strategically aligned with FAO's corporate priorities. • Translates complex technical information into compelling messages, writing in a clear and concise manner and coordinates the preparation of a wide range of promotional material (videos, web apps, human interest stories, visual products, social media assets, websites, press releases, etc.). • Promotes content on a variety of channels with multitarget audiences. • Supports the establishment of partnerships with governments, civil society organizations, private sector, media, influencers, etc. and leverages partnerships to mobilize in-kind advertising with outdoor advertisers, media, transport, retail or entertainment companies. • Conceptualizes and develops content and activities for FAO's youth programme to engage youth and educators in FAO's work. • Makes decisions regarding the viability and effectiveness of visibility products or activities, the timing and targeting of related efforts, and how to maximize time and resources. • Organizes global events, exhibits and branding exercises and provides strategic support and capacity building to regional/country communication officers and to external partners, to arrange local campaigns, events and marketing activities worldwide. • Supports the implementation of trust fund projects related to communication and outreach activities.

Technical/Functional Skills • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable. • Extent and relevance of experience in the field of communications and outreach for prominent organizations, and/or interagency initiatives (including campaigns, events, exhibits, social marketing, media relations, sponsorship arrangements, branding), particularly at the international level. • Extent and relevance of experience in producing high-impact communication content for a wide variety of audiences (governments, general public, youth, private sector, UN agencies/development sector) in multiple languages and at global level, especially in areas relevant to FAO's mandate. • Extent and relevance of experience in using branding exercises, pro bono agreements or partnerships to increase outreach. • Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is considered a strong asset.
