In the context of WHO’s 13th General Programme of Work (GPW) and its triple-billion strategy, the incumbent will support the communications activities of Anglophone country offices in the WHO African Region and that of the WHO Regional Office in Africa. Key deliverables include accurate and timely production and dissemination of high-quality public information products which promote the achievements and results of key public health initiatives and highlight the work of WHO and partners in the countries. The incumbent will work with colleagues in the regional office and Anglophone country offices to ensure health issues, the health response and WHO’s role therein, gain visibility among partners, donors, the public, the media, and other key stakeholders.

The incumbent will carry out the following tasks under the supervision of the Director of Office of the Regional Director. 1. Research, write and edit WHO human-interest, impact stories, with a focus on Anglophone countries, for publication on WHO Afro online and social media platforms. 2. Research, script and support the video editing of WHO human-interest, impact video stories, with a focus on Anglophone countries, for publication on WHO Afro online and social media platforms. 3. Write press releases, social media posts, talking points and other communication materials in high standard English for publication on WHO Afro online and social media platforms. 4. Provide support to building the capacity of Anglophone country offices to produce high-quality WHO multi-media (text, photo and video) impact stories. 5. Monitor and critically review Anglophone country websites and social media platforms for story ideas and follow up with country offices to produce impact stories for the WHO Afro online and social media platforms. 6. Coordinate photo and video shoots in anglophone countries to produce high-quality photographs and video footage to be used for WHO Africa impact stories and social media posts. 7. Take high-quality photographs and video footage with a smartphone for use on WHO Afro online and social media platforms. 8. Provide external communications support to conferences, official country visits of the Regional Director, or any other high-level events in Anglophone countries. 9. Any other relevant task required for this assignment.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
