The position is located in the Communication Centre in UNICEF’s Supply Division (SD).

Within UNICEF the mandate of Supply Division is to achieve equitable access to essential supplies and services for every child and adolescent. The Communication Centre within SD leads on both internal and external communication for SD, winning support for the cause of children from decision makers and the wider public.

The Communication Officer UNV will work on external communication with a focus on developing and writing communication products, supporting media relations, and coordinating communication initiatives.

This position contributes to each priority area of the UNICEF Strategic Plan, which in turn contributes to achieving results for children across the SDGs.

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Manager, Communication Centre, UNICEF Supply Division, the UNV will contribute primarily to the following areas of work:

Communication materials Develop and write communication products and materials in support of UNICEF Supply Division’s communication strategy and priorities, for external and internal publication on SD’s own channels, and on other UNICEF and external media channels where appropriate.

Media relations Develop and maintain information about, materials for, and relationships with journalists and media outlets. Contribute to the ongoing development of effective media engagement strategy for Supply Division.

Research & analytics Conduct research in support of communication activities, engaging colleagues across the division, and in country offices, where appropriate. Analyzing available data and crafting recommendations to further strengthen and support the division’s ongoing communication and advocacy efforts, with a particular focus on optimizing reach and engagement of web content and the UNICEF Supply Website.

Coordination Lead the coordination of selected communication-related initiatives and activations. Developing communication plans against key moment and events, coordinating the production of content and its distribution, collaborating closely with colleagues across the Communication Centre and Supply Division, as well as those in country, regional, and HQ offices where appropriate.

Monitoring & evaluation Undertake monitoring and evaluation activities, including preparation of results and analysis reports to support impact and continuous improvement of communication efforts.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/expected outputs: Delivered at a level of high quality and in a timely manner, the following outputs are expected: • Communication products and materials produced in support of UNICEF Supply Division’s communication strategy and priorities. • Information about, materials for, and relationships with journalists and media outlets. • developed and maintained. • Research conducted, recommendations developed and presented in support of communication activities. • Communication-related content initiatives successfully coordinated add delivered on time • Monitoring and evaluation activities undertaken, including preparation and presentation of results and analysis reports. • A final statement of achievements at the end of the assignment.

communication, the media, advocacy or related field. • Experience of producing public communication material, with advanced English writing skills for the purpose of public communication. • Experience of working in team settings, with demonstrated interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience of initiatives coordination, with demonstrated organizational skills. • Experience of working with media relations or for the media is an asset. • Experience of working in international development/cooperation is an asset. • Experience of working in English-language settings is an asset. • Experience of producing and delivering presentations, with demonstrated written and oral presentation skills, is an asset.

Since this is an international UNV assignment, the holder will be responsible for the organization of his or her own home and the other essential elements of life. While the cost of accommodation can be high, the city offers many different options in the different areas.

UN Volunteer entitlements and allowances: The purpose of the allowances and entitlements is to enable UN Volunteers to sustain a secure standard of living at the duty station in line with United Nations standards without incurring personal costs. The allowances are in no way to be understood as compensation, reward, or salary in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service.
