UNOPS supports partners to build a better future by providing services that increase the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of peace building, humanitarian and development projects. Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors and United Nations organizations.

New York Service Cluster (NYSC) supports the United Nations Secretariat, as well as other New York-based United Nations organizations, bilateral and multilateral partners in the delivery of UNOPS mandate in project management, infrastructure management, and procurement management.

Sustainable Development Cluster (SDC) supports diverse partners with their peacebuilding, humanitarian and development operations. It was formed by combining the following portfolios: Grants Management Services (GMS), UN Technology Support Services (UNTSS), Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio (DSIP) It provides Services to partners' programmes that are designed, structured, and managed with a global perspective and primarily serving partners that are headquartered in New York. The SDC has a footprint of approximately 125 countries.

UNOPS has signed an agreement with the United Nations to implement the project activities for Global Pulse.

UN Global Pulse is the UN Secretary-General’s innovation lab. Originally established in 2009 to harness the power of big data and artificial intelligence to protect the vulnerable during crises, UN Global Pulse operates as a globally distributed network advancing innovation in the UN’s work for people and planet. UN Global Pulse (UNGP) works with digital innovation, real-time data and artificial intelligence to further sustainable development, humanitarian and peace outcomes. UNGP’s vision is ‘A world in which responsible and inclusive digital innovation serves people, advances their sustainable development, and protects the planet’. Our mission is to work at the intersection of digital innovation and the human sciences to inform, inspire, and strengthen the ability of the United Nations family and those it serves to anticipate, respond and adapt to the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Functional Responsibilities

The successful candidate(s) will join a multidisciplinary team and benefit from rich interactions with experts in different fields, including international development, humanitarian aid, data science, data visualization, technology and communications. The internship will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the applications of new data sources and artificial intelligence technology to support the SDGs Agenda 2030, as well as to understand communications inside large international organizations like the UN system.

This is a position in UNOPS for supporting projects carried out for UN Global Pulse. The incumbent of this position will be a personnel of UNOPS under its full responsibility.

The intern will work closely with the communications team and the innovation strategy workstream to contribute to producing communications materials that help streamline UNGP processes.

These responsibilities include, but are not limited to support of the following activities:

  • Assist with maintaining project management tools and repositories for the communications teams;
  • Assist with the preparation of the monthly communications reports;
  • Assist with coordinating, scheduling and facilitating Global Pulse lab network meetings and
  • workshops;
  • Support ongoing communications activities by performing research, and writing and editing content including reviewing reports and other communication products;
  • Support website updates by adding and editing content and performing quality assurance;
  • Attend meetings, take notes and support brainstorming on new communications methods to promote UN Global Pulse’s strategy and goals;
  • Assist with the production of regular external communications including quarterly newsletters;
  • Assist with collecting and monitoring digital media analytics and media mentions.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD program (or equivalent) or have graduated from with within three months prior to the application date of the internship. Areas of study include Data Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Project Management or related fields.

Experience

  • Excellent and effective writing skills are an asset;
  • Demonstrated experience using project management tools including Trello, Slack, and Miro;
  • Experience in Word, Excel, Outlook and Google docs is essential;
  • Knowledge and strong interest in data, technologies and communications for international development are highly desired;
  • Previous experience with an international organization is an asset;
  • Knowledge of data science, data analysis, and/or data visualization will be an advantage.

Language

  • Intermediate knowledge in English (written and oral) is required.

Contract type, level and duration - Internship

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
