UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. In support of UNICEF’s global advocacy for children, photography and videography play a vital role by providing visual evidence and storytelling to highlight the situation of children.

In support of developing the skills of young women working in the field of multimedia (photography and/or videography), the Advocacy and Communication section at UNICEF Afghanistan is seeking to hire female UN youth volunteers with basic photography or videography skills to provide them with mentoring and capacity-building to further develop their careers in photography and videography.

To qualify, the candidate must have basic knowledge of using a professional grade camera, working knowledge of photo and video editing software and working knowledge of the English language.

As part of her assignment, the UN volunteer will take part in photo and video missions around Afghanistan to gather photo and video stories under the supervision of a Communication Specialist who will also provide structured training and support.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Multimedia Specialist (photo/video capacity building) P3, the UNV Communication Associate (photo and video) will:

• Take photos and videos according to an agreed editorial plan set by the supervising specialist, especially highlighting UNICEF donor contributions and UNICEF impact in the health sector. • In collaboration with the Communication Specialist (Health) P3, as well as other relevant colleagues as needed, participate in briefings and meetings to understand the themes, context, and activities to be captured in photographs and videos. • Conduct interviews to gather information for captions and shot lists, including but not limited to voices of women and children accessing and benefiting from health services, health workers (including female health workers), UNICEF staff in health and other relevant sectors. • Request consent for photos and videos. When given consent, obtain written consent forms. • Writing captions, shot lists and other documentation as required for multimedia products, especially for the health sector. • Edit photos and videos. • Include donor recognition in multimedia pieces as necessary, especially for UNICEF’s major donors in the health sector, such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. • Participate in multimedia training sessions. • Uploading photographs to online databases and cataloging photographs. • Join photo and video field missions as assigned, especially alongside the Communication Specialist (Health) and under supervision of the Multimedia Specialist (photo/video capacity building) P3. • Traveling to locations around Afghanistan as required, including but not limited to UNICEF-supported health facilities (e.g., hospitals, health posts), mobile health and nutrition teams, etc. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the

course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

the fields of photography and/or videography (professional work experience at the national and/or international level). • Demonstrable work experience for at least one year. Two years’ work experience is desirable. Secondary school degree is required. • On software: basic knowledge of photo and/or video editing software is required. • Ability to organize work, work independently and prioritize work under pressure, coordinate multiple tasks, maintain attention to detail, and coordinate with a variety of stakeholders. • Candidate should have basic knowledge of using a professional grade camera for photography or/and videography. • Adaptability, flexibility, and commitment to continuous learning. • Language skills: Fluency in spoken and written English, Dari and/or Pashto is required.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.

Entitlement;

*Note on in-country travel: UNICEF Afghanistan provides travel allowance for Mahram’s accompanying female staff on official travel. The Mahram can only be an immediate family member (husband, father, brother and over 18-year-old son). UNICEF will cover 50% of the applicable DSA of the travel location and round-trip ticket for Mahram.
