The Honduras Country Programme is being implemented at both national and local level, with a strong focus on child protection and education. The Communication team through its communication strategy and public advocacy at the global and national level works closely with Programmes to support the programmatic priorities of the country office to promote the rights of every child.

The Communication Associate (GS6) will work under the supervision of the Communication Specialist providing support to the implementation of digital and social media strategies.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Communication Specialist, this post is responsible for supporting the dissemination and media strategy in the country office. This position assists in the production of communicational material, graphic, audio-visual and photography pieces. The incumbent is also responsible for the ongoing improvement, expansion and maintenance of the UNICEF Honduras website.

S/he will also provide technical assistance to the administration and implementation of the Honduras U-Report by working closely with the Communications Specialist and Programmes to ensure the U-Reports contribution to the implementation of the Country Programme, transference of knowledge and acquisition of skills.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

1. Support in the production and distribution of communications materials

  • Support in implementing the tasks in the country communication work plan and strategy as assigned.
  • In consultation with supervisor, coordinates audio-visual and photo coverage effective relevant country programme activities and results. Develop complementary, country specific and local community materials and activities.
  • Support the production of communication materials (e.g. briefing notes, images, video. Web pages etc.) that meet the country and global standards as set out in the Communication Toolkit as well as compliance with UNICEF´s Brand Book standards.
  • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
  • Follow up on the production of advocacy and communication materials (e.g., films, videos, audio-visuals, etc.), and oversee the qualitative aspects of production, (e.g., quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design etc.) to meet standards as set out in the Communication Toolkit.
  • Maintain an up-to-date documentation centre for communication materials including publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio-visual materials, web resources etc.
  • In coordination with supervisor, handles distribution of publications and materials to other areas of the office and counterparts

2. Support media relations

  • Maintain and update media relations contact list/database. Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials in all media formats, as appropriate.
  • Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assist in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.
  • Assist in collaborating with the media through activities such as organizing project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.
  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of coverage (clippings, coverage etc.)

3. Support Social Media and Website

  • Support the implementation of the digital strategy by identifying materials, report or other documentos, to facilitate the development of the contents for the UNICEF digital channels
  • Coordinate UNICEF´s social media presence in a number of digital platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, etc.
  • Contribute to raise awareness and promote social mobilization through social media campaigns, and to increase the number of followers and people involvement.
  • Update Country Office Web site as a strategic communication, information and knowledge management tool, optimized for knowledge transfer, information sharing, etc.
  • Conduct social media analysis for UNICEF Honduras platforms, measure audience engagement and contribute to building UNICEF’s social media fan base through assessment of key audiences, content planning, content management, search engine optimization, analytics and assessment of effectiveness of platforms and content
  • Assistance to the administration and implementation of the Honduras U-Report by working closely with the Communications Specialist and Programmes.

4. Monitoring and evaluation

  • Assist in coordinating appropriate audience research and compiling and analysing relevant data.
  • Assist in providing feedback to DOC on the use and appropriateness of global communication materials such as publications, images and multimedia products.
  • Ensure good quality data collection, analysis and evaluation and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies, planning and effective and efficient advocacy.
  • Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences as directed by supervisor.

5. External events for Advocacy

  • Help organize and generate public support for special events and activities to promote country programme goals.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Maintain and update celebrity and partner contact lists/database for country office.
  • Monitor/document process and effectiveness of working with these individuals/organizations.

Assist Communication Section team members in events, launches, campaigns, and other key communication activities

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Competion of secondary school, supplemented by courses in communications, journalism, public relations, advertising, communiation and/or graphic design.
  • University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields is an asset.
  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant professional experience in communication, print and broadcast media, interactive digital media and/or publicity
  • Experience in graphic design is an asset.
  • Work experience in an international organization or UN agency is desirable
  • Fluency in Spanish and English required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
