This position is located in the Advocacy Section (AS), Public Affairs and Policy Support Branch (PAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Vienna. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of a Public Information Officer within AS. The Senior Coordination Officer, Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), DPA/UNODC will act as the second reporting officer.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of a Public Information Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Communication Associate will: • Ensure implementation of information programmes, campaigns and or/ major events to publicize the work of UNODC, in particular UNODC research and the work of the Research and Trend Analysis Branch. This includes drafting information strategies, implementing actions, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analysing the outcome. • Substantially contribute to, coordinate and/or guide the production of communication products with an emphasis on social media as well as infographics and other visual communication materials, as well as press releases, website stories, etc., including by proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution. • Proactively gather and review reports and other research outputs, and seek input and information from RAB staff, with a view to conducting regular social media campaigns using UNODC data and research. • Coordinate and organize campaigns around events relevant to UNODC’s work, as well as for launches of UNODC research products. • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the communication products/campaigns with an emphasis on social media with respect to strategic messaging and the envisaged target audience - have we reached the audience we wanted and did they pick up the right message(s) - and work with RAB on continuous improvement. • Liaise with various service providers (artistic and technical) to facilitate production, translations and reproduction of public information materials. • Act as focal point and media liaison on issues related to research and the work of RAB, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc. • Ensure coordination with field offices and the respective programme heads of the supported Global Programmes to promote selected activities in the field, including timely use of social media. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Results/expected outputs: • As an active UNODC team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNODC and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: o Supported a number of content development including digital content in enhancing and promoting UNODC’s work in general and RAB’s work in particular. o Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment. o A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

the national and/or international level in communications, journalism or public relations, or other relevant programmes; experience with coordinating communications campaigns is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization. • Direct experience producing and managing social media and web content is a requirement. • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills. • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing. • Experience with using and communicating data and research findings is highly desirable. • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel. • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
• Proficient knowledge of Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, and on-line design applications, such as, Canva and Adobe After Effects.
• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines. • Sound security awareness. • Have affinity with or interest in drugs, crime, and terrorism-related issues, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

The international UN Volunteer will be based in Vienna, Austria, where the UNODC HQ is located. Austria is at security level 1 (Minimal) and is considered non-restrictive regarding travel. Currently there are no significant security threats in general not direct threats to UN personnel or assets within the country. It is the UN Volunteer’s responsibility to comply with immigration, customs and health requirements while entering/exiting the country.

Quality of life in Austria is reflected by the low crime rate, high level of social security and recreational infrastructure. It is illegal in Austria to wear in a public place any clothing or object that conceals the face and makes facial features unrecognizable. There is no general threat from terrorism.

UN Volunteer entitlements and allowances: The purpose of the allowances and entitlements paid to UN Volunteers is to enable UN Volunteers to sustain a secure standard of living at the duty stations in line with United Nations standards without incurring personal costs. The allowances are in no way to be understood as compensation, reward, or salary in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service.
