This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

This UNV assignment is part of UNICEF’s communication and advocacy unit. The communication team at UNICEF JCO develops, plans, implements, monitors and evaluates an advocacy and communication strategy to get children's and women's issues into the public domain with the objective of promoting awareness to strengthen general public, private sector and political will in support of UNICEF's mission in the country, and enhance the organization's credibility and brand. Ensure that the Representative and the country programme team are provided with professional expertise and advice on all aspects of external relations communication as required.

National UN Youth Volunteers in Jordan are entitled for:

  • Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) at the amount of JOD 716.92;
  • Annual and learning leaves;

Under the direct supervision of Media Officer, the National UN Youth Volunteer will:

Media: • Support in developing and maintaining media relations (print, TV, radio, blogs, social media, web, etc.) • Support in collecting information, conduct interviews and perform related tasks for the purpose of producing human interest or other stories and/or documenting UNICEF-supported activities, donor visits and other events related to UNICEF work. • Contribute to the media outreach efforts and media requests, liaising with programmes colleagues and management. Contributing to increasing reach, engagement and share of voice for the organization in traditional and digital media • Assist with writing, editing and producing quality communication products, to communicate the story of UNICEF's cooperation to a wider audience. • Produce a media monitoring daily report, based on the regular monitoring of political, economic, social and developmental issues in support of UNICEF Jordan's communication & advocacy strategy for children and youth in the country. • Support in generating monthly analytic reports • Support in the creation and implementation of the monthly media calendar.

Events: • Provide support to events, launches, press and media conferences

Advocacy: • Support the implementation of relevant communication and advocacy activities and maintain partnerships with civil society and other organizations to promote child rights. • Maintain and update media relations contact list/database. Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media.

• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Results/Expected Outputs:

As an active UNICEF team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNICEF and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

• Effective support is provided for drafting, editing, and reviewing 1-2 press releases per month. • Assisting in responding to 3-4 Media queries/ pitches according to office priorities and calendar • Field visit to assist in producing 1 human interest / month or other stories and/or documenting UNICEF-supported activities • Daily media monitoring • Monthly media tracker • Assisting in updating a Weekly update of event calendars

Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or other relevant programmes (up to 3 years) at the national and/or international level; experience with digital media is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; • Flexibility to provide field support • Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others; • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills; • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team; • Flexible and open to learning and new experiences; • Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions; • Fluency in spoken and written Arabic an English is required. • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded; • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).

Amman, the capital, is a peaceful city with over four million residents. People are friendly to visitors. Services in terms of banking, transportation, health and communications are easily-available. Though Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken among the majority of the population, especially in Amman. Road network is good both in terms of spread and quality of the roads. Public transportation in Amman is limited. Taxis are relatively cheap and easily available. There are a number of shopping malls, restaurants, gyms, and cinemas. A large variety of accommodation options can be found; however, it is worth noting that prices in Amman have generally increased in the past few years. There are no specific security threats. Amman is a very easy city in which to live; large, many amenities, very modern and serviced by an international airport with direct flights to most capital cities. According to the assessment of the UN Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS) Jordan is a family duty station (category A hardship).

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan.
