The United Nationals World Food Programme (WFP) is a highly prestigious, reputable and the world's largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.

We are currently seeking for a Junior Professional Officer to fill the position of National Communications Assistant with our Communications unit based in Timor-Leste in the Southeast Asia Region.

The role of JPO will help enhance the visibility and reputation of WFP in Timor-Leste and ensure that external communications align with WFP’s brand, the country office communication strategy, and the Country Strategic Plan (CSP) and in support of the Government of Timor-Leste’s nutrition and food security objectives.

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer, the JPO will have the following responsibilities:

• Support audience focused social media content collection and Facebook post development in line with WP’s communication strategy and Facebook targets.

• Support media and outreach activities including developing media pitches, cultivating good relationships with media outlets, and arranging meet the press events.

• Manage and document events, capture engaging images of programme activities and programme results.

• Ensure timely translation of interviews and external communications including media releases, Facebook posts, bulletins, leaflets, and other communication materials from English to Tetun.

• Working closely with programme team colleagues, conduct case study interviews, draft people human centred impact stories and social media outputs that bring WFP’s programme work to life.

• Review content on the WFP website, make suggestions for improvements and help draft new content.

• Monitor and report on social media results, media mentions and topics of interest and relevance to the country office team.

• Take part in weekly 121’s and team planning sessions as required.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

• Increased media coverage and social media reach. • Timely translation of content from English to Tetum • Strengthened relations with media outlets and journalists. • Website is kept up to date and traffic is increased. • Facebook followers and page likes increased in line with agreed targets.

SUPERVISION

Take part in weekly supervision sessions to review progress against agreed workplan objectives.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Complete mandatory training. Attend social media training including the use of apps for content production. Photography training.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the two-year assignment, the JPO should have obtained:

• Very good knowledge of the media landscape in Timor-Leste and how to develop and pitch media friendly content. • Good skills in identifying stories and developing audience centric communications. • Familiarity with effective multimedia communication techniques. • Good general understanding of WFP’s overall operations and activities in the region of assignment.

Communications, Media Studies or similar. • Minimum of two years relevant working experience in Timor-Leste with a Government, civil society, or private sector organisation. • Fluency in English and Tetun. • Proficiency in Windows MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook). • Behavioural competencies: leads by example with integrity, drives results and delivers on commitments, fosters inclusive and collaborative teamwork, applies strategic thinking, builds, and maintains sustainable partnerships.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS • Exposure to the international arena either by direct work for an international institution/organization or by interacting with international stakeholders. • Experience of managing events. • WFP’s international professionals are required to serve in different locations around the world during their career (including in hardship duty stations); willingness to be mobile would maximise opportunities for long-term retention into the Organization.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
