Post Title: Communication Assistant

Level: GS-5

Duty Station: San Salvador, El Salvador

The purpose of the job:

Under the supervision of the Communication Specialist (NO-C), this post is responsible for supporting the communication and advocacy strategy in the country office.

This position assists in the production of communicational material, graphic, audio-visual, and photography pieces. The incumbent also supports the ongoing improvement and expansion of the digital communication strategy.

How can you make a difference?

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative Communication Assistant to support UNICEF’s El Salvador office in the key functions/ accountabilities described below:

1. Support in the production and distribution of communications materials

•Support in implementing the tasks in the country communication work plan and strategy as assigned.

•In consultation with the supervisor, coordinates audio-visual and photo coverage of effective relevant country program activities and results. Develop complementary, country-specific, and local community materials and activities.

•Support the production of communication materials (e.g. briefing notes, images, video. Web pages, etc.) that meet the country and global standards as set out in the Communication Toolkit as well as compliance with UNICEF´s Brand Book standards.

•Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories, and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.

•Follow up on the production of advocacy and communication materials (e.g., films, videos, audio-visuals, etc.), and oversee the qualitative aspects of production, (e.g., quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design, etc.) to meet standards as set out in the Communication Toolkit.

•Maintain an up-to-date archive for communication materials including publications, press releases, clippings, photographs, audio-visual materials, web resources, etc.

•In coordination with supervisor, handles distribution of publications and materials to other areas of the office, counterparts, and media.

2. Support media relations

•Maintain and update the media relations contact list/database. Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media.

•Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media and digital influencers as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.

•Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assist in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.

•Assist in collaborating with the media through activities such as organizing project site visits, and facilitating multimedia communication materials (photo coverage, TV footage, and audio).

•Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of coverage (clippings, coverage etc.)

3. Support Social Media and Website

•Support the implementation of the digital strategy by identifying materials, reports, or other documents, to facilitate the development of the content for the UNICEF digital channels

•Coordinate UNICEF´s social media presence on a number of digital platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, etc.

•Contribute to raising awareness and promoting social mobilization through social media campaigns, and to increase the number of followers and people involved.

•Update the Country Office Web site as a strategic communication, information, and knowledge management tool, optimized for knowledge transfer, information sharing, etc.

•Conduct social media analysis for UNICEF El Salvador platforms, measure audience engagement and contribute to building UNICEF’s social media fan base through assessment of key audiences, content planning, content management, search engine optimization, analytics, and assessment of the effectiveness of platforms and content.

4. Monitoring and evaluation

•Assist in coordinating appropriate audience research and compiling and analyzing relevant data.

•Assist in providing feedback to DOC on the use and appropriateness of global communication materials such as publications, images and multimedia products.

•Ensure good quality data collection, analysis, and evaluation, and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies, planning and effective and efficient advocacy.

•Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences as directed by supervisor.

5. External events for Advocacy

•Help organize and generate public support for special events and activities to promote country program goals.

•Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.

•Maintain and update celebrity and partner contact lists/databases for the country office.

•Monitor/document the process and effectiveness of working with these individuals/organizations.

•Assist Communication Section team members in events, launches, campaigns, and other key communication activities Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned as required by the Supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

Completion of secondary school, supplemented by courses in communications, journalism, public relations, advertising, communication, and/or graphic design.

A university degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related fields is an asset.

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, interactive digital media, and/or publicity.

Experience in graphic design is an asset.

Work experience in an international organization or UN agency is desirable.

Language requirements:

Fluency in Spanish and English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, or Russian) is an asset.
