Contract

This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

On 24 February 2022, the Russian Federation launched a war against Ukraine. In the space of just two months, more than 5.3 million refugees have been forced to flee Ukraine. With a ban on men (18-60 years old) leaving Ukraine, a significant proportion of the refugees are women and children. The Republic of Moldova has provided safe haven to more than 400,000 refugees, numbers increasing each day. The population of the country increased for more than 4% through the last 2 months. The 2022 war in Ukraine is having a significant human rights and humanitarian impact on the civilian population, particularly on the lives and livelihoods of women and girls – a pattern in all violent conflicts. The sudden influx needs careful management to ensure their humanitarian and protection needs and rights are met, especially with regards to safe accommodation, livelihoods, health as well as minimizing disruption to children’s education. The UN Women-managed Women, Peace and Security Trust Fund (WPHF) has opened a specific country window for Ukraine and Moldova. This window focuses on supporting civil society organizations with response efforts to immediate humanitarian needs of women and girls and efforts focusing on GBV services and protection. The fund aims at delivering results in three areas: (i) Enhanced role of civil society organizations in advocating for and ensuring accountability on WPS commitments (institutional funding); Enhanced inclusive and gender responsive humanitarian/crisis planning, frameworks, and programming; and Enhanced safety, security and mental health of women and girls’ and their human rights respected. The WHPF’s budget is entirely dedicated to national civil society organizations in Ukraine and Moldova and will allocate 100% of its funds to the CSOs selected to implement activities in the three above-mentioned areas. In light of the above, UN Women Moldova is looking for a Volunteer, who will support and contribute to overall communication and research activities on humanitarian support and UN Women WPS agenda in the context of refugee crisis in Moldova.

Under the direct supervision of the UN Women Project Officer for Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund and Communication Specialist, the UN Volunteer will contribute to enhancing visibility of UN Women activities in the field of humanitarian response and Women in Peace and Security agenda and development of research materials undertaking the following tasks:

• Provide support in designing communication materials (power point presentations, Canva designs etc.). • Draft messages, adapt them to the audiences of different communication channels and disseminate them on social media accounts. • Collect and analyse data on issues related to refugee crisis and response, humanitarian-an actions and WPS agenda, provide inputs for knowledge management documents.
• Collect data and provide inputs for different reports (inter-agency, government, donor, regional and HQ), support in coordination of reports with stakeholders. • Draft communication materials such as briefs, reports, assessments in the areas of Humanitarian Support and Women Peace and Security. • Perform other related duties as required.

Geography and Climate: The Republic of Moldova lies in the central part of Europe in the north-eastern Balkans, with a population of about 2.6 million, being one of the poorest countries on the continent. The capital of Moldova is Chisinau. On the North, East and South Moldova is surrounded by Ukraine, and on the West it is separated from Romania by the Prut River. As a small country, most destinations within the Republic of Moldova can be reached in a day drive.

The climate of the Republic of Moldova is moderately continental. It is characterized by a lengthy frost-free period, short mild winters, lengthy hot summers, modest precipitation, and long dry periods in the south. At the landscape level, the territory of the country is situated within three natural zones – forest, forest-steppe and steppe. The largest forest tracts represented by the forest reservations Codrii Moldovei and Plaiul Fagului are located in the center of the country. Culture: The culture of the Republic of Moldova represents a large gamut of cultural activities: literature, theatre, music, fine arts, architecture, cinematography, broadcasting and television, photographic art, design, circus, folk art, archives and libraries, books editing, scientific research, cultural tourism and so on. Religion: The primary religion is Christianity, over 90 percent of the population nominally being Eastern Orthodox. Adherents of other faiths include Roman Catholic, Protestantism/Neo-Protestantism, Judaism, Islamism, Hinduism etc.

Administrative-territorial organization: the Republic of Moldova is divided into 32 districts, 5 municipalities, 2 regions with special status (Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauzia, Territorial administrative units from the left part of Nistru river, generically known as Transnistria region). Transnistria region is a part of the Republic of Moldova, but it is not controlled by the constitutional government. Public transportation: In addition to the private taxi services, the state runs a reliable and cost-effective public transport system. Safety and security: The crime rate is low, but there have been cases of theft. Walking alone during daylight hours is permitted, but you may want to be more careful at night. As Moldova is neighboring Ukraine, a country at war with the Russian Federation, there are regional security risks. It is therefore important to remain updated on the conflict situation. Thus, security advice is sent systematically by UNDSS.
