The UNESCO Jordan Office works with the national authorities and people of Jordan to promote peace and sustainable development, through education, culture, sciences, communication and information. Besides supporting the implementation of UNESCO’s conventions to protect and safeguard cultural and natural heritage, the Office works to enhance access to quality education across Jordan through strengthening the national education system as well as to promote freedom of expression and access to information.

The incumbent will support the communication and visibility activities of UNESCO Jordan within the aforementioned sectors which include, but are not limited to, the following programs and projects:

In the field of Education, UNESCO is currently implementing the “System Strengthening Partnership“ (SSP) programme with the Ministry of Education, aiming to strengthening the Ministry’s core functions and complementary, the Education Management Information System will also be supported in 2022. UNESCO has also launched the initiative “Towards Greater Inclusion and Diversity in Education in Jordan”, which will improve access to and quality in education for all children and youth regardless of their gender, abilities, disabilities, backgrounds and circumstances. In support of Jordan’s Response Plan for the Syria Crisis, the project “Provision of TVET, On-The-Job-Training and Entrepreneurship Education to Youth Affected by the Syria Crisis in Jordan” provides access to TVET opportunities for both Syrian refugees and vulnerable youth in Jordan.

In Culture, UNESCO is leveraging cultural heritage for sustainable development and the creation of employment opportunities and within the Communication and Information sector, the Office is working to support national efforts in advancing Jordanian media to further increase its freedom, independence and professionalism as well as promoting media and information literacy to counter the spread of disinformation.

Within the overall authority of the Head of the Office and under the direct supervision of the Resource Mobilization & Partnership Officer the National UN Volunteer Communication and Visibility Officer will:

Writing and reviewing content 1. In both English and Arabic, recommend, develop and/or review appropriate information and communication materials for use in media and other advocacy and communication activities, as well as ensure quality and dissemination of printed and audio-visual materials. 2. Draft and edit articles, press releases, human-interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, in both English and Arabic. 3. Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefings and visits of media, high-level visits, donors, and other special interest groups. The task includes preparing information materials (e.g., press releases, programme summaries, country fact sheets and media kits), and assisting in the planning, logistics and administrative arrangements. 4. Review videography contents (raw footage, drone images, subtitles) and liaise with the contractors to ensure that the video contents convey the key project messages.

Social Media and other Media Management 5. Manage UNESCO Jordan Office’s online presence through social media and the UNESCO Jordan’s website, while also keeping them up to date in line with UNESCO Jordan Office’s projects and programmes. 6. Maintain and update media relations and contact list/database. 7. Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media. Support the supervisor and project staff in networking with journalists and other media figures 8. Liaise with relevant staff at UNESCO HQ to amplify the impact of UNESCO Jordan Office’s work on the global page.

Visibility and Advocacy 9. Produce advocacy and communication materials and tools (e.g. images, online-based publications, video, info graphics, Web pages etc…) 10. Support strategic positioning and resource mobilization efforts of UNESCO Amman, ensure and expand visibility of UNESCO Jordan projects, in consultation with the project teams, vis-à-vis donors and other UNESCO partners 11. Support campaigning efforts of UNESCO projects and programmes by developing content and following up on advocacy efforts. 12. Develop and advise on communication strategies of UNESCO programmes, including communication of results and impacts

Other Duties 13. Contract and manage editors, proofreaders, graphic designers, videographers and printing houses as needed for reports, lessons learnt and other publications. 14. Support the project team in collecting and organizing project visibility files and communication materials. 15. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, e.g. Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related social science field with at least 4 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in communications, print media, digital and social media, public relations. OR • Master’s degree in a relevant area, e.g. Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related social science field with at least 2 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in communications, print media, digital and social media, public relations; • Experience with resource mobilization is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;

Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge:

• Strong writing and editing skills in English and Arabic • Expertise in communication and advocacy • Proven experience in building strong relationships with journalists, and media outlets. • Proven experience in development and dissemination of communication material for advocacy purposes • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills • Proven interpersonal, collaboration and teamwork skills. • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure within a multicultural environment and as part of a team. • Demonstrated proficiency in basic office software tools (MS Office suite) and email and internet as well as with programmes such as InDesign, Photoshop etc. familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment. • Self-motivated, Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and with tight

• Desirable: valid national driver’s license • Have affinity with or interest in Education, Science and Culture volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Amman, the capital, is a peaceful city with over four million residents. People are friendly to visitors. Services in terms of banking, transportation, health and communications are easily available. Though Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken among the majority of the population, especially in Amman. Road network is good both in terms of spread and quality of the roads. Public transportation in Amman is limited. Taxis are relatively cheap and easily available. There are a number of shopping malls, restaurants, gyms, and cinemas. A large variety of accommodation options can be found; however, it is worth noting that prices in Amman have generally increased in the past few years. There are no specific security threats. Amman is a very easy city in which to live; large, many amenities, very modern and serviced by an international airport with direct flights to most capital cities. According to the assessment of the UN Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS) Jordan is a family duty station (category A hardship).

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan.
