Contract

This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

The UNV professional will be incorporated into one of the Office’s thematic units and will contribute to strengthening reporting and communication activities related to the implementation of the office strategic thematic priorities.

The UNV Volunteer will interact with other UN agencies, funds and programs, as well as with public institutions, authorities and civil society, particularly those dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the unit coordinator or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

•Support the development and implementation of OHCHR communications strategy, including the visibility plans of the projects and programmes implemented by the Office, ensuring a gender and human rights-based approach; •Assist in collecting, drafting, producing, and disseminating human rights’ stories (written, graphic or audiovisual) capturing the impact of OHCHR’s work in Guatemala; •Assist on communication initiatives with a focus on project and program results, as well as on reports to the donors; •Support the implementation of communications products and activities to promote human rights and OHCHR key messages among different audiences and through diverse channels; •Assist on other tasks required.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

•Recognition of volunteerism for human rights within the mandate of OHCHR; •Work with their direct supervisor to identify and include new opportunities to integrate volunteerism in host agency projects, programs campaigns and communication material; •Promote discussion, reflection, and recognition of the contribution of volunteerism towards the host Agency´s mandate both internally and with agency partners;
•Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism, by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); •Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; •Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results, and opportunities;
•Contribute with articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; •Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers; •Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/expected outputs

•As an active OHCHR Guatemala team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered OHCHR Guatemala and its beneficiaries, in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

o The Office communication strategy is developed and implemented in timely manner taking into account a gender and human rights approach o Human Rights’ stories are drafted, produced, and disseminated, illustrating the impact of OHCHR’s work in Guatemala o Support with drafting of project and programme proposals and reports to the donors is provided in line donors timelines and procedures o Communications products and activities are successfully implemented, reaching target audiences. o Human rights, gender and diversity perspective is systematically applied and integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment o Representation of OHCHR-Guatemala in particular on International Volunteer Day (5th December) and other UNV Programming activities o Volunteerism for human rights included in host agency projects, programs, campaigns, or communication materials. (at least one of the aforementioned per 12 months contract)

A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed, is provided

•Professionalism: Knowledge of the full range of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to planning and executing effective campaign strategies and programmes, e.g. campaign management, media operations and audience outreach, message targeting. Ability to rapidly analyse and integrate diverse information from varied sources. Ability to handle sensitive information with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships. Ability to produce a variety of written communications products in a clear, concise style. Ability to deliver oral presentations to various audiences. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Qualifications, skills, experience:

•Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, and reporting skills. •Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing. •Experience in working in the Latin American region and/or knowledge of the human rights situation in Guatemala is considered an advantage. •Experience in the implementation of projects / reporting and monitoring is considered an advantage. •Commitment to volunteerism, previous experience as a volunteer is considered an advantage. •Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including indigenous peoples, grassroots community members, youth organizations, and authorities at different levels will be highly considered. •Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel. •High Level of Self-motivation, ability to work with minimum supervision and ability to work with tight deadlines will be highly considered.

The contract can be extended depending on continuation of mandate, availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectancy of renewal of the assignment.

A UN Volunteer receives a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA), which is composed of a Monthly Living Allowance (MLA) and a Family Allowance (FA) for those with dependents (maximum three).

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are provided a settling-in-grant (SIG) at the start of the assignment (if the volunteer did not reside in the duty station for at least 6 months prior to taking up the assignment) and in the event of a permanent reassignment to another duty station.

UNV provides life, health, permanent disability insurances as well as assignment travel, annual leave, full integration in the UN security framework (including residential security reimbursements).

UN Volunteers are paid Daily Subsistence Allowance at the UN rate for official travels, flight tickets for periodic home visit and for the final repatriation travel (if applicable). Resettlement allowance is paid for satisfactory service at the end of the assignment.

UNV will provide, together with the offer of assignment, a copy of the Conditions of Service, including Code of conduct, to the successful candidate.
