Contract

Pursuant to the mandate of the OHCHR, stated in the resolution 48/141 of the General Assembly on May 31, 2005 the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Government of Guatemala, signed the agreement on the establishment of a Country Office in Guatemala, approved by the National Congress through Decree 40-2005 and ratified by the President of the Republic of Guatemala on June 23, 2005. The agreement came into effect on September 20, 2005.
In accordance with the terms established in the agreement signed by de Government of Guatemala and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the mandate of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) includes the observation of the situation of human rights, to report and provide legal and technical advice to national authorities and civil society. Also, the mandate was designed to contribute to the improvement of national capacities to protect and promote human rights and to implement recommendations of international mechanisms, to improve the overall situation of human rights. The Office´s activities for the 2022 planning cycle have been designed in accordance with the overall global OHCHR OMP 2018-2023 strategic objectives and work plan, in compliance with baselines, specific needs and thematic priorities.
The UNV professional will be incorporated into both, the Planning, Reporting and Evaluation Unit and the Public Information Unit, and will contribute to strengthening reporting and communication activities related to the implementation of the office strategic thematic priorities for the current planning cycle.
The UNV Volunteer will interact with other UN agencies, funds and programs, as well as with public institutions, authorities and civil society, particularly those dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights.
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the unit coordinators or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
• Support the development and implementation of the communication strategy of the human rights projects implemented by OHCHR-Guatemala and external Communication component of OHCHR-Guatemala Management Plan, ensuring a gender and human rights-based approach
• Assist in collecting, drafting, producing and disseminating human rights’ stories (written, graphic or audiovisual) capturing the impact of OHCHR’s work in Guatemala.
• Support in drafting of the Office's Weekly, Monthly, Mid-Year Review, and the End-Of-Year Reports
• Support in drafting project and programme proposals and reports to the donors
• Support the implementation of communications products and activities to promote human rights and OHCHR key messages among different audiences and through diverse channels.

communication strategies and techniques, reporting, documentation, graphic and audio-visual production in relation to human rights / or development fields is required. Experience in writing, editing, and reporting is required. Proficiency in MS Office applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and email/internet; familiarity with office technology equipment. • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills. • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing. • Experience in working in the Latin American Region and/or knowledge of the human rights situation in Guatemala is considered an advantage. • Experience in the implementation of projects / reporting and monitoring is considered an advantage • Commitment to volunteerism, previous experience as a volunteer is considered an advantage. • Excellent communication interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including indigenous peoples, grassroots community members, youth organizations, and authorities at different levels will be highly considered. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel. • High Level of Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision and ability to work with tight deadlines will be highly considered.
Guatemala is a unique country and OHCHR is a unique operation. It provides for an interesting and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.
