This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Communication Analyst or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Communication Assistant will:

1. Support to implementation of communications and advocacy strategies

· Prepares, updates and post, when needed, items and content to the corporate websites and social-media channels.

· Maintains information database and photo library.

· Assists in the preparation of presentations and briefing materials.

· Designing layouts for UNFPA Sudan publications including briefing materials and newsletters.

· Assists in developing and maintaining close collaboration with Sudanese media, as well as with groups and agencies whose support is essential to the achievement of advocacy and communication objectives.

· Gathers content of relevant country efforts from the file level to develop communication materials for dissemination through social and traditional media channels.

· Coordinates the communication focal points efforts at the field level.

· Assists in producing advocacy and communication materials such as short movies, high quality images, other printed and audio-visual products.

· Contributes in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based, traditional media and social media.

· Assists in supporting donor’s visibility efforts by contributing to communication and visibility products customized to various donor’s requirements.

· Assists in working with Social Media Analyst to implement the UNFPA Sudan Communication SOPs.

· Assists in Creation and promotion of campaigns to local, national and international media on UNFPA Programme and achievements.

· Develops and maintains close contacts with national stakeholders, multilateral and bilateral donors, civil society and private sector for implementation of the communications strategy, organization of roundtable discussions, press conferences, briefing sessions, interviews, launches, etc.

2. Advocacy

· Support the establishment of the Sudan Volunteers Club (SVC).

· Assists the coordination between Sudan Volunteers Club members and UNFPA Programme.

· Follows up the Sudan Volunteers Club activities on the states level.

· Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with youth networks on the filed level.

3. Administrative support

· Supports all administrative tasks of the Communications Unit such as contracts and work-plan flows and administrative/ budget tools.

· Supports financial management and budgeting.

· Provides logistical support for missions, events and outreach for corporate communications of the organization.

· Provides all other administrative support as required to the Communications Unit

· Support with formatting of external facing reports and documents.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

· Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);

· Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;

· Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.

· Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;

· Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;

· Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, e.g., Public Relations, Journalism and Multimedia

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

2 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in media or communication.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise:

Journalism, mass media and broadcasting, Other communications related experience

· Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;

· Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;

· Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

· Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;

· Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;

· Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;

· Desirable: valid national driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain; (if not applicable, delete)

· Sound security awareness;

Have affinity with or interest in UNFPA mandate, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System
