Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2524 (2020) authorizing the mandate of UNITAMS which is to support the political transition, progress towards democratic governance, in the protection and promotion of human rights, and sustainable peace; to support peace processes and implementation of future peace agreements; to assist peacebuilding, civilian protection and rule of law, in particular in the areas of Blue Nile, South Kordofan and Darfur; and to support the mobilisation of economic and development assistance and coordination of humanitarian assistance.

The position is based in Khartoum and is located in the the Khartoum Close Protection Team of the Security Section of. The incumbent will report to the Close Protection Officer (Team Leader) or delegated authority, on all close protection issues.

Responsibilities Within the limits of delegated authority and under the general supervision of the Chief Security Officer, the Close Protection Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:

•Conducts and coordinates personal protection operations for the designated official when on duty. •Remains within the proximity of the principal, at all times. •Remains vigilant and alert in case of any threat to the protected person and acts accordingly. •Conducts all personal protection security operations as outlined in the UN personal protection management guidelines. •Coordinates all activities with relevant parties to include the Security Operations Unit and other appropriate security organizations, as required. •Co-ordinates with local authorities during close protection operations; •Conducts advance work and implement pre-established security arrangements; •Contributes to pre-deployment briefings; •Assists in training session on close protection subjects to keep abreast with current tactics and •techniques; •Whenever necessary, supervises drivers attached to the Close Protection Unit in the performance of their assigned duties. •Operates all personal protection equipment and ensures equipment readiness. •Carries all issued equipment while on duty. •Performs other duties, as assigned.

Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; Solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; Is willing to learn from others; Places team agenda before personal agenda; Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Technological Awareness: Ability to use various technology, weapons and security devices pertinent to the toles and responsibilities of the close protection unit; Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the close protection; Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; Shows willingness to learn new technology.

Judgement/ Decision-making: Identifies the key issues in a complex situation of close protection operations; Demonstrated capability of rapid decision-making in emergencies (with little margin of error), under conditions of extreme stress or when rapid response is required

Education High School diploma or an equivalent diploma is required. Technical training in close protection, self-defence and security techniques, is required. UNDSS Close Protection Officer Certification (CPOC) is highly desirable (and will be expected for future advancement in this field). Completion of an international, national or commercial close protection training is desirable. Recent (within two years) successful completion of an emergency trauma bag certification or equivalent of a first aid certification is desirable. High standard of physical fitness is desirable. Training in martial arts and/or specialised security practices is an asset.

Work Experience At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience, is required, in close protection with a local, national, private, or international security organization. Experience and proficiency in the use of close protection weapons, communications, surveillance equipment, and vehicles is required. Desirable experience: close protection of one or more principals; static and mobile protection; close protection command post operations; close protection response techniques; conduct of close protection training.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
