Organizational Setting

The FAO Representation in Bangladesh is responsible for leading FAO's response to regional priorities for food security, agriculture and rural development through the identification, planning, and implementation of FAO's priority activities in the country. It ensures a multidisciplinary approach to programmes, identifies priority areas of action for the Organization in Bangladesh and, in collaboration with Regional Office Asia and Pacific and the departments and divisions at Headquarters, develops, promotes and oversees FAO's strategic response to the country priorities. The representation also supports the regional office in the incorporation of regional priorities into the Organization's Programme of Work and Budget and implements approved programmes and projects in the country, monitors the level of programme implementation and draws attention to problems and deficiencies. The office also develops and maintains relations with Government of Bangladesh, UN agencies, the resource partners and other development institution at the country level.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Bangladesh has been providing Technical Assistance (TA) to the Government of Bangladesh through several projects have components of livestock production. FAO Bangladesh has been planning to provide TA to the implementation of Livestock and Dairy Development Project (TA-LDDP) of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. FAO Bangladesh will recruit a Climate Smart Livestock Specialist for the upcoming UTF project with LDDP.

Reporting Lines

The Climate Smart Livestock Specialist is an SC 9 position will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Bangladesh, and direct supervision of the Team Leader (Programme). The Climate Smart Livestock Specialist keeping close liaison with the Project Director and the Chief Technical Coordinator (CTC) of LDDP and other relevant project staff, the representative of partner organization of public, private or development organization or the field staff work for the implementation of project activities, and following technical supervision of the LTO and guidance of the AGAG will undertake the following:

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight and lead the implementation of CSA activities in accordance with the project work plan, as well as provision of guidance and training to the LDDP team and project stakeholders;
  • Develop activities in close collaboration with PDO of LDDP to increase awareness and adoption of CSA and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices;
  • Develop real-time database on the enteric methane emission in the rumen of large and small animals and on the livestock waste management system
  • Provide policy and planning support to climate resilient livestock production through minimizing carbon foot prints of dairy and meat production system
  • Provide guidelines to CSA database development through ex-ante assessment of the baseline GHG emissions and reduction potential following the Tier 2 IPCC methodology for livestock production
  • Contribute to the CSA and SML manuals, guidelines and training materials;
  • Support the development of GHG emission estimates for the livestock sector using IPCC guidelines and MRV systems;
  • Integrate CSA principles and practices into value chain development.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Ruminant Nutrition/Animal Husbandry with strong background of climate smart livestock production.
  • Candidates having PhD with extensive field experience will get preference.
    • A minimum of 15 years` practical experience in the field of animal production, including experience in climate smart livestock production;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with small- medium scale animal farming technology and management practices and in agribusiness and value chain development;
  • Proven experience in evidence based livestock policy and standard guideline development

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Appropriate qualifications and/or experience in CSA farm management, extension, or rural development;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with small- medium scale animal farming technology and management practices and in agribusiness and value chain development;
  • Proven skills in programme monitoring and coordination;
  • Demonstrated innovative thinking and practical execution;
  • Ability to solve problems, use initiative, and manage work under limited supervision;
  • Applicant have a working knowledge of English (written and verbal) and local dialect is preferred.
  • Any other tasks assigned to him/her by the Team Leader
