Lead analytical work on climate and nature-related economic risks.

You have:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in natural science (ideally environmental science) or another relevant field.
• Minimum of four years’ relevant professional experience in climate change and nature risk-related research and analysis.
• Excellent understanding of climate change and good knowledge of the technological advances needed to mitigate it.
• In-depth knowledge of the models, empirical methods and datasets used to analyse climate change and nature-related risks, with experience in data analysis and modelling.
• Good sense of how to apply climate science and ecological-economic analysis to the central banking context.
• Experience in leading and organising projects and stakeholder management, and ability to communicate complex technical issues to a variety of stakeholders in simple, non-technical language.
• Advanced (C1) command of English and intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU.
• Good understanding of the implications of climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and climate-nature interactions for monetary policy and financial stability.
• Experience in advising policymakers in a public authority or an international organisation.
• Familiarity with environmental risk assessment, scenario analysis and macro-financial analysis related to climate and nature risks.
• Experience of working in a multicultural and/or multidisciplinary team.

Your team In your role as Climate Scientist, you will be part of the Climate Change Centre (CCC). The CCC is responsible for shaping and steering the ECB’s climate and nature agenda both within and outside our organisation, building on the expertise of different teams working on these topics within the ECB. The CCC is located within the Counsel to the Executive Board and reports directly to the President, who oversees the ECB’s work on climate change and nature-related economic impacts and risks.

You will bring your expertise in climate and nature-related risk to key policy choices and analytical work regarding the ECB’s approach to climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation and their macro-financial implications.

Your role As Climate Scientist you will:

- lead and contribute to the ECB’s analytical work on climate change and nature-related economic impacts and risks, using your in-depth, science-based knowledge of climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem services, natural capital and ecological-economic systems; - help the CCC workstreams and ECB business areas apply scientific knowledge on climate change, ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss and natural resource dependencies to the areas of monetary policy, economic research and financial stability; - keep up to date with external scientific developments and research on the impact of climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and the interaction between climate and nature-related risks; - contribute to briefings, speeches and other internal and external communications on climate and nature-related risks and their relevance for central banking.

Qualifications, experience and skills Essential:

- a master’s degree or equivalent in natural science (ideally environmental science) or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences); - in addition to the above, a minimum of four years’ relevant professional experience in climate change and nature risk-related research and analysis; - an excellent understanding of climate change and a good knowledge of the technological advances needed to mitigate it; - an in-depth knowledge of the models, empirical methods and datasets used to analyse climate change and nature-related risks, with experience in data analysis and modelling; - a good sense of how to apply climate science and ecological-economic analysis to the central banking context; - experience in leading and organising projects and stakeholder management and the ability to communicate complex technical issues to a variety of stakeholders in simple, non-technical language; - an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

- a good understanding of the implications of climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and climate-nature interactions for monetary policy and financial stability; - experience in advising policymakers in a public authority or an international organisation; - familiarity with environmental risk assessment, scenario analysis and macro-financial analysis related to climate and nature risks; - experience of working in a multicultural and/or multidisciplinary team.

The contract offered will be fixed-term, the appointment being for three years as of the exact starting date of the selected person.

Temporary appointments may be extended or made permanent subject to organisational needs and budgetary constraints. This may result in a staff member with a non-convertible fixed-term contract being offered a convertible contract in accordance with the ECB Conditions of Employment.
