UNICEF’s climate and environmental sustainability strategy is structured around these four main pillars:

  1. Evidence generation by implementing thought leadership initiatives on understanding environmental and climate change impacts on children in Malaysia
  2. Child-sensitive climate policies and plans by ensuring that climate change and environmental risks and opportunities that affect children’s rights, development and well-being are integrated into key policies, planning and budgeting systems
  3. Climate awareness and education by increasing awareness, education and positive behaviour among communities, young people, governments, private sectors, civil society organisations and other stakeholders on climate adaptation and mitigation
  4. Innovation and youth participation in climate action by designing, piloting, and scaling up innovative climate actions through close engagement with young people, the public, private sectors, academia and others

How can you make a difference?

  1. Supporting the engagement, programming and implementation of climate and environmental initiatives implemented by UNICEF Malaysia, including the Youth Environment Living Labs (YELL), a joint UNDP and UNICEF Malaysia initiative to rethink youth engagement in climate and environmental action through local narratives, the Air Quality Monitoring in Schools (AQUAMS) Project in partnership with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) Sabah, and Community-Based Disaster Resilience and Preparedness programmes
  2. Identify and build strategic partnerships and networks with youth organisations and environmental organisations that champion inclusive participation of young people in climate action and environmental sustainability
  3. Assisting government ministries and agencies in developing and implementing child-sensitive policies, plans and initiatives relating to climate change, the environment and disaster risk reduction
  4. Support with the organisation of key events and advocacy campaigns for youth engagement in climate action, including developing advocacy strategies for inclusive messaging to increase the climate literacy of children and youth
  5. Supporting the implementation of initiatives that leverage innovation to ensure a climate-safe future for children and young people, including working with startups and the private sector;
  6. Provide support towards initiatives that build the capacity of youth to engage on climate and environmental issues, including strengthening youth engagement for climate policies, youth participation at COP, and youth empowerment in action learning projects
  7. Support in documenting and communicating key trends, gaps, best practices, and lessons learnt on climate and environmental issues.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Bachelors or Diploma in Social sciences, education, arts and humanities, management, life/natural sciences, urban studies or a related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience (full-time or part-time employment, voluntary work and paid/ unpaid internships on climate change or environmental sustainability. Experience in working with youth-led organisations or environmental organisations or on climate & environmental issues is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English and Malay is required. Working knowledge of any other Malaysian language(s) is an advantage

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
