Work Location

The internship is designed to be in person at the UN Headquarters in New York but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

Expected duration

The internship is unpaid and full-time for a minimum 3 and maximum of 6 months. Interns work five days per week (35 hours), under the supervision of the Chief of the Climate Section. The duration and modality can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate. The desired start date is late February or early March 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located in the Climate Communications Section under the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications and is for a minimum period of three months, with a possibility of extension up to six months depending on availability and the needs of the Department. The Climate Communications Section works to inform, inspire, and mobilize global audiences with science-based, solutions-focused content to inspire ambition and climate action for our common future and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For more information about the UN’s climate work, please visit: un.org/ClimateAction The internship is unpaid and full-time for a period of a minimum 3 to a maximum of 6 months. The internship is designed to be in person at the UN Headquarters in New York but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate. The intern reports to the Chief of the Section. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the internship period. The intern may perform some of the following functions: - Research and analyse information on climate change, gather information from diverse sources and help assess news value; - Assist with the implementation of the department's climate communications strategy and campaigns, including the ActNow campaign; - Identify, research, and draft content (text, photos, documents and multimedia) for online publication (website and social media); - Edit and upload content on the UN Climate Action and ActNow websites using the content management system Drupal; - Edit and/or caption videos and other multimedia products by using tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite; - Help manage the storage, organization and maintenance of digital assets, contact lists, calendars, templates and other key documents; - Help create digital assets, such as quote cards, for web and social media, based on established climate branding; - Conduct research on specialized sector media, e.g., renewables, transport, food, or oceans; - Monitor media, fact-check and carry out related research work for climate communications campaigns and related information products; - Perform additional tasks that may be assigned by the Team Lead.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: - Applicants must meet one of the following education requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); OR (c) have graduated with a university degree in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (as defined above); - Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is desirable. - Proficient in standard software applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar; proficiency in using new technologies, web-based platforms; familiarity with SharePoint is a plus. - Comfortable using or open to learning Canva or Adobe Creative Suite on an as-needed basis. - Familiarity with Drupal website management a plus. - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat
