Contract

UN-Habitat Egypt is continuing to grow to address the ever-growing needs of Egypt’s urban cities. Urbanization is a key driver of development and cities are seen to be on the frontline of many of the global challenges the world is currently facing. As the world rapidly urbanizes, cities are facing challenges of meeting the needs of growing populations. In order to capture the potential of these populations, sustainable living communities are necessary. SDG 11 emphasizes inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. A key component to achieving this is the provision of basic services including mobility, water, and sanitation. In today’s world, emphasis must be put on the provision of these services while also taking in consideration climate change. UN Habitat’s Strategic Plan has four domains of change, and this position will be focusing on Domain of Change 1: Reduced spatial inequality and poverty in communities across the urban-rural continuum, and Domain of Change 3: strengthened climate action and improved urban environment.
Under the direct supervision of the Basic Services and Climate Change Programme Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
1- Support the UN-Habitat Climate Change Programme in Egypt through the fol-lowing activities: - Support the implementation of project activities to ensure timely delivery of project goals and deliverables. - Support on project reporting and documentation. - Review technical documents and provide brief summaries and feedback to im-plementing partners. - Conduct necessary research for literature reviews and for problem solving as needed, especially focusing on climate resilience in cities and key challenges of implementing green infrastructure and green technologies in Egypt’s major cities. - Research global best practices and methodologies for new business areas. - Support in the development of concept notes and project proposals. - Prepare clear and comprehensive slideshow presentations for various partners.
2- Support in preparing for global events, forums and conferences related to sus-tainable urban development and climate change: - Provide support in the preparation for the 12th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12), which will be held in Cairo, Egypt, in 2024, including, but not limited to: brainstorming on sessions, speakers, etc.; formulating concept notes, briefs and programmes within the Forum; and coordinating with both UN-Habitat HQ and the Egyptian Government on meetings and negotiations. - Provide support in the preparation for effective participation of the Government of Egypt in COP28, which is expected to take place in November 2023 in the United Arab Emirates, following the outcomes of COP27. - Support in awareness/communications campaigns to boost the visibility and pres-ence of both UN-Habitat and Egypt, where appropriate.
