Contract

This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

UNICEF Nigeria has developed a Climate Landscape Analysis for Children in Nigeria (CLAC) report and wishes to improve the evidence on the impact of climate change on children. We are therefore seeking a numerate analyst with a knowledge of environmental issues to conduct a ‘deep-dive’ into all the numerous existing data sources, studies and surveys. By closely assessing the nature of the impact of climate change on different sectoral aspects of our programming – health, nutrition, WASH, education and child protection, this will improve our understanding of the impacts of floods, desertification and environmental pollution –plastic waste crisis, indoor air pollution - on children’s rights across Nigeria. The aim of this work is to enhance our understanding of the geographical spread of climate-related impacts and to identify ‘hotspot locations’ of vulnerability, eg for climate -related migration, with high incidences of impacts to children and their access to services – such as child and maternal health, education and child protection concerns (attendance, dropouts, interruptions to learning, learning outcomes, vaccinations, unattended childbirth etc) to improve our programmatic targeting.

Whilst the Climate Analyst would be located within the WASH section in Abuja, his/her work would cover all sectors managed by the office. The work can include field visits as necessary to build evidence and corroborate findings. The expert will further strengthen the implementation of CLAC Action Points.

Under the direct supervision of WASH Manager, the Climate Analyst will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Deep-dive review of all data sources eg MICS, deprivation analysis, health and education management systems, WASHNORM etc for evidence of the impact of climate-related events on child well-being in Nigeria.
  2. Support design of climate smart solutions in WASH, Health, Education, Nutrition programmes.
  3. Support monitoring of implementation of Climate resilient solutions.
  4. Contributing to developing and testing hypothesis for improving climate resilience.
  5. Supporting other climate-related activities of the office as necessary eg advocacy events, youth mobilisation activities etc
  6. Contribute to developing knowledge products based on practice (e.g. compiling summary of Climate Change Initiatives such as Solar, Community Awareness, etc implemented by UNICEF) across Nigeria.

Abuja provides very good living conditions for all professionals. Abuja is a modern and well developed city, with a hot climate and most amenities you would expect eg restaurants, cinemas etc. The majority of staff live in apartments or houses in shared premises or compounds with good security and services such as air conditioners and generators. Transport is primarily by private car, whilst there are also several taxi apps (eg Uber) commonly used. As this is a national volunteer assignment, the volunteer would be responsible for sorting out his/her accomodation.
