Duties and Responsibilities Organization Setting:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office of UNEP delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy announcement is meant to solicit applications for rostering purposes to serve as the pool of expertise that UNEP West Asia Office is creating within the framework of the long-term strategic partnership and the Saudi Environment Sustainability Programme with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) in Saudi Arabia, the expert will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Provide technical inputs and advice on coordination of relationships with key partners; provide technical inputs to MEWA’s efforts at the country level to develop new and innovative partnerships. 2. Provide strategic guidance to MEWA on the Civil Society Groups work on engaging youth and women populations on issues of environment, as well as establishing partnerships with youth civil society organizations and individual activists. 3. Provide strategic guidance MEWAs Civil Society Group’s work on engaging faith-based organizations on issues of environment, as well as establishing partnerships with faith based civil society organizations and individual activists. 4. Provide conceptual, monitoring and coordination expertise to the MEWA’s work as required, including on Task Force on Civil Society. 5. Collaborate on the development of high-quality advocacy tools that emerged from civil society engagement.

Outputs / Work Assignments (Deliverables): 1. Initial assessment of civil society groups including advocacy and mobilization strategy. 2. Communication strategy for civil society groups and advocacy products. 3. Monthly and quarterly reports of civil society groups engagement. 4. A final report of civil society groups working on environment issues in Saudi Arabia.

Qualifications/special skills Master’s degree in international relations, political science, environmental science, public policy, natural sciences, or related fields is required. PHD is an asset. Minimum of 10 years of professional technical experience in the field of partnerships with Civil Society Groups is required. Knowledge of environment issues related to civil society groups in Saudi Arabia is an asset. Experience working in West Asia is desirable.

Languages Fluency in written and spoken in both English and Arabic is required.
