Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org).

The Urban Planning and Design Unit (UPD) at UN-Habitat Lebanon focuses on the program’s multisectoral portfolio – such as environment and climate change, housing and heritage, WASH and energy – among others. The team is involved in: - Securing programmatic funding opportunities through drafting environmental and urban upgrading proposals; - Internally developing preliminary designs and preparing high standard construction drawings – including architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical layouts as well as specification documents; - Effective planning and coordination – through defining a vision, an agenda, a set of priorities and the scale of operation – to ensure successful project implementation and timely delivery; and lastly - Reports write-up and design.

Some of the main activities that we have been involved in are: - Developing community-driven and community-led public and recreational spaces and football fields; - Undergoing buildings rehabilitation and streets upgrading projects in vulnerable areas across Lebanon; - Implementing WASH projects in both urban and rural contexts advocating for the provision of equitable water for all and limiting environmental degradation; and which include: water harvesting and rationing, developing integrated municipal solid waste plans, composting and recovering recyclables, as well as promoting circular economies through engaging the private sector and the community; - Executing renewable energy projects including solar street lighting, on-grid energy generation and building-level solar energy systems. The intern will be under the supervision of the UN-Habitat, Beirut, Senior Planning and Infrastructure Engineer - Head of Urban Planning and Design Unit.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Beirut, Urban Planning and Design internship is for six (6) months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Senior Planning and Infrastructure Engineer, the intern will: - Assist in the acquisition of information required by the project(s) through desk and field research. - Assist in the analysis of collected data under the supervision of the project(s) coordinator(s). - Prepare detailed Bill of Quantities (BoQs), technical drawings, and specifications based on preliminary site assessments and national and international engineering practices, etc. - Contribute to the development of engineering designs. - Contribute to the implementation of feasibility analyses including cost estimates for individual project components. - Join the UPDU team during field visits, perform site inspections as requested and submit field visit reports. - Support the UPDU in the daily implementation of engineering projects. - Attend project coordination meetings and prepare meeting minutes. - Assist in the assessment of permitting requirements. - Support the preparation of Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) of specific projects and assist external consultants in the preparation of environmental assessments. - Follow up on irrigation water/treated wastewater quality testing, and report to the project coordinator. - Follow up with implementing partners/contractors on a daily basis, as requested by the project coordinator. - Support in any task required to ensure the programme’s sustainability and growth.

Education Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of studies: Bachelor of Engineering in a relevant discipline (Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Management, Environment/Water Policy).

Knowledge in the preparation of environmental studies (such as Environmental Impact Assessments EIAs, etc.).

Knowledge in climate change adaptation measures, such as wastewater reuse, rainwater harvesting, etc.

Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and other computer programmes.

Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Ability to keep work organized, prioritize tasks, and have an overview of the tasks/engagements/meetings of the day ahead is required.

Good technical knowledge of a list of the major anticipated environmental and social impacts that would arise from a wastewater network project and a list of relevant actors and governmental entities that should be informed and engaged is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
