  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

The salary for this job should be between 101,253 USD and 137,526 USD.

Stronger positioning of the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programmes Child Marriage and FGM as a knowledge broker for children is a priority for both institutions - and is addressed as a challenge of the Programmes in the external evaluation. In this context, Child Protection Specialist position with a focus on a knowledge management is being established.

The Child Protection Officer will be part of the Prevention of Harmful Practices Unit. Under the overall guidance of the Associate Director Child Protection Programme Team (Position Number 14333) and direct supervision of the Senior Adviser Child Protection (position number 93258), and within the context of supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, UNICEF Strategic Plan, UNICEF Gender Action Plan, UNICEF Child Protection Strategy and the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme on Child Marriage and FGM, the Child Protection Officer supports the Child Protection Programme Team on the implementation of the Knowledge Management Strategy for the Programme and other initiatives to end child marriage and FGM. This is a NYHQ-based position with frequent international travel to regional and country offices, international conferences, workshops and seminars.

How can you make a difference?

The Child Protection Officer will implement the knowledge management strategies for the Global Programmes on Child Marriage and FGM. The Child Protection Officer supports the implementation, monitoring and reporting of progress against the knowledge management strategy within the Section and across participating offices for UNICEF and UNFPA. The Child Protection Officer provides technical guidance and programme management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable contributions to efforts in creating a protective environment for children against all harm and protecting their rights to survival, development and well-being as established under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, international treaties/framework and UN intergovernmental bodies.

The Officer contributes to the achievement of concrete and sustainable programme/project results according to plans, budget allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology, and UNICEF's Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework.

Summary of results-based key functions/accountabilities:

  1. Implementation of Knowledge Management Strategies for the Global Programmes on Child Marriage and FGM.
  • Ensures that the existing mechanisms for implementation of the strategies are well understood and properly applied by all programme staff participating in the Programmes.
  • Drives the identification of existing knowledge gaps on child marriage and FGM programming and prioritizes actions to close them.
  1. Knowledge capturing for the Global Programmes on Child Marriage and FGM.
  • Develops, in collaboration with the respective programme sections, regional and country teams, summaries, synthesis, fact sheets, and briefs, based on completed reports for use by a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Collates existing knowledge on child marriage and FGM - quantitative data, as well as qualitative research, to provide a regular update about children affected by these harmful practices.
  • Contributes to capturing of internal knowledge through documentation of practices and lessons learned, in collaboration with other sections.
  1. Knowledge organizing and sharing for the Global Programmes on Child Marriage and FGM.
  • Establishes and manages a consolidated system with validated data on child marriage and FGM, disaggregated to the extent possible, with easy-to-generate country-specific or thematic profiles.
  • Establishes, in consultation with Communications and IT sections a warehouse or identifies alternatives for easy access to knowledge products for child marriage and FGM produced both by UNICEF and external stakeholders.
  1. Support to knowledge generation capacity strengthening for the Global Programmes on Child Marriage and FGM.
  • Liaises with knowledge institutions on the latest research and studies on child marriage and FGM and ensures that reports/products are broadly disseminated.
  • Maintains a roster of experts (individuals and institutions) who can implement a quality evidence/knowledge generation work relevant to the Global Programmes on Child Marriage and FGM.
  • Provides other necessary support to country offices, region offices and partners on knowledge management.
