Stronger positioning of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as a knowledge broker for children is a priority for both institutions - and is addressed as a challenge of the Programmes in the external evaluation. In this context, Child Protection Specialist position with a focus on a knowledge management is being established.

This post will be supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, UNICEF Strategic Plan, UNICEF Gender Action Plan, UNICEF Child Protection Strategy and the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on elimination of FGM, the Child Protection Officer supports the Child

Protection Programme Team on the implementation of the Knowledge Management Strategy for the Programme and other initiatives to end FGM. This is a NYHQ-based position with frequent international travel to regional and country offices, international conferences, workshops and seminars.

You will implement the knowledge management strategies for the Joint Programmes on FGM. You will also support the implementation, monitoring and reporting of progress against the knowledge management strategy within the Section and across participating offices for UNICEF and UNFPA. In addition, you will provide technical guidance and programme management support throughout the programming processes to facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable contributions to efforts in creating a protective environment for children against all harm and protecting their rights to survival, development and well-being as established under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, international treaties/framework and UN intergovernmental bodies. Incumbent will also contribute to the achievement of concrete and sustainable programme/project results according to plans, budget allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology, and UNICEF's Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework.

How can you make a difference?

Implementation of Knowledge Management Strategies for the Joint Programmes on FGM.

  • Ensures that the existing mechanisms for implementation of the strategies are well understood and properly applied by all programme staff participating in the Programmes.
  • Drives the identification of existing knowledge gaps on FGM programming and prioritizes actions to close them.

Knowledge capturing for the Joint Programmes on FGM.

  • Develops, in collaboration with the respective programme sections, regional and country teams, summaries, synthesis, fact sheets, and briefs, based on completed reports for use by a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Collates existing knowledge on FGM - quantitative data, as well as qualitative research, to provide a regular update about children affected by these harmful practices.
  • Contributes to capturing of internal knowledge through documentation of practices and lessons learned, in collaboration with other sections.

Knowledge organizing and sharing for the Joint Programmes on FGM.

  • Establishes and manages a consolidated system with validated data on FGM, disaggregated to the extent possible, with easy-to-generate country-specific or thematic profiles.
  • Establishes, in consultation with Communications and IT sections a warehouse or identifies alternatives for easy access to knowledge products for FGM produced both by UNICEF and external stakeholders.

Support to knowledge generation capacity strengthening for the Joint Programme on ending FGM.

  • Liaises with knowledge institutions on the latest research and studies on child marriage and FGM and ensures that reports/products are broadly disseminated.
  • Maintains a roster of experts (individuals and institutions) who can implement a quality evidence/knowledge generation work relevant to the Joint Programme on ending FGM.
  • Provides other necessary support to country offices, region offices and partners on knowledge management.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • A university degree (Master’s higher) in international development, public health, social work, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, communications, and social science field is required. and/or related field is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant progressively responsible professional experience at the national and/or international levels in international development, research/ evidence building, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, or other social science and/or other related areas is required.
  • Prior professional experience in knowledge management in child protection, harmful practices and/other related areas is required.
  • Relevant experience in child protection and related areas and in programme/project development in a UN system agency or organization is an asset.
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
