Chief Investment Officer (Global Equity Head) – MAS and H&E

Within IFC, support for the development and expansion of financing and advisory solutions across a wide range of sectors is one of IFC’s key strategic priorities. The Global Manufacturing, Agribusiness & Services (MAS) and Global Health & Education (H&E) departments work closely with IFC’s regional industry teams to finance and provide technical guidance to companies in the manufacturing, agribusiness, services, and health & education sectors from IFC’s own balance sheet and through mobilization of other capital.

The Equity Team (CMGEQ) supports both the Global MAS and H&E Departments and operates in close collaboration with regional industry teams and regional departments to (i) formulate IFC’s strategies for investing equity and mezzanine financing across the MAS and H&E sectors, (ii) engage in business development, (iii) execute transactions, and (iv) manage assets from origination until exit, and (v) lead knowledge management on equity and mezzanine investing.

IFC is seeking a Chief Investment Officer / Global Equity Head (GEH) for MAS and H&E based in Washington, DC. The GEH will have primary responsibility for equity and mezzanine investments. This is a key leadership role requiring significant and demonstrated leadership skills. The Global Equity Head will be part of the senior management team of the MAS and H&E departments, providing leadership to the department’s business strategy, operations, business growth and portfolio oversight, and talent management globally within these business lines.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Governance and staffing

• Report jointly to the Directors of the Global MAS and H&E departments.

• Maintain excellent working partnerships with all Regional Industry Directors/Managers, Global Sector Managers, Regional VPs/Directors, and Risk and Corporate Portfolio Departments.

• Lead the Equity team with global oversight and accountability for MAS’ and H&E’s Equity Business, with staff based in Washington DC, Johannesburg, and Singapore.

New Business

• Responsible for developing equity/ quasi-equity investment themes and portfolio construction goals to guide new equity/ quasi/equity business development.

• Bring knowledge and expertise to MAS’ and H&E’s new business and client activities to support MAS and H&E’s strategy and create value-add for IFC’s investment portfolio and clients.

• Support business development in line with investment themes.

• Serve as the decider on equity and mezzanine investments, including by chairing investment committee reviews of transactions from inception, commitment, disbursement, and exit.

• Establish key investment guidance/criteria for selecting and prioritizing investment opportunities aligned with established equity portfolio construction goals.

• For each new investment, approve: (i) Investment thesis; (ii) Equity management plan; (iii) Investment structure and valuation; (iv) Consistency with equity strategy; (v) Selection and onboarding of board nominees

• Reinforce quality standards and profitability targets for transactions and portfolio

• In addition to decider role on equity and mezzanine investments, GEH is to support overall MAS and H&E business delivery as a member of the Management Team through chairing / approver responsibilities on debt transactions on an as-needed basis to be agreed with MAS and H&E Directors

Portfolio

• Responsible for overall portfolio strategy in line with defined investment themes, in particular, exit strategy formulation and equity management plans

• Identification and validation of core equity investments at the beginning of each fiscal year and oversight of such investments throughout the year

• Chair quarterly regional equity portfolio reviews – focus on execution of equity management plan and realizing value

• Approve equity sales strategies and execution, ensuring consistency with portfolio strategy

• Represent MAS and H&E at periodic Operations Committee reviews of IFC equity portfolio construction, quarterly valuation reviews, etc.

• Approve the appointment and clear any change to the nominee board directors

• Assess the performance of nominee directors

Leadership and Knowledge Sharing

• Provide leadership, professional development, and mentoring for specialized equity IOs

• Disseminate IFCs equity culture and lessons learned, working together with the Legal equity practice group leader and Equity Risk team

• Serve as an internal and external thought leader

Selection Criteria

• Commitment to the World Bank Group and IFC's mission, strategy, and values

• A Master's degree or equivalent professional qualification in finance or business and a minimum of 12 years of relevant work, much of which should have involved equity/mezzanine investments

• Proven track record of managing and motivating staff across different locations, becoming a strong mentor and growing businesses, leading by example

• Excellent leadership and people management skills and openness to feedback

• Building organizational capacity through system and process improvements

• Ability to develop innovative solutions and challenge the status quo to build the business

• Recognized as a team player, leader, strategic thinker, and thought leader

• Strong written and verbal communications skills; fluency in English essential

• Ability to collaborate with teams across the World Bank Group

• Ability to represent IFC externally and to develop and manage relationships with clients, sponsors, private equity, institutional investors, government, media, donors, and other stakeholders

• Ability to work in the matrix organization, deliver high-quality work within deadlines, and meet team objectives

• Strong sense of service to clients and demonstrated business development aptitude

• Very sound business judgment, ability to deliver results under stressful timetables and environment.
