Overview

Design a user-friendly interface for the CBD website.

You have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a university degree is desirable.
  • At least five years of experience in web interface design is required.
  • Expert knowledge in HTML, CSS and JavaScript/TypeScript is desirable.
  • Expert knowledge in design tools such as Adobe Indesign/Figma or equivalent is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Bootstrap, AngularJS/Vue/React, jQuery and REST API is desirable.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.
  • Availability to work onsite in the office of the CBD Secretariat in Montreal, Canada, is required.
  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have permission to work in Canada.

Result of Service The result of the contractor’s work will produce a complete package of wireframes, design system and exact design specifications for all the critical components of the website that will enable Secretariat’s IT team to redesign the convention’s website.

Duties and Responsibilities Organizational setting

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is located in Montreal, Canada. Its main tasks are to service meetings of the Conference of the Parties and its subsidiary bodies and to liaise and coordinate with Parties and relevant institutions for the effective implementation of the Convention.

The Secretariat is seeking services of a user interface designer to improve the design and features of CBD website (https://www.cbd.int). The output of the designer’s work will result in a more dynamic, attractive and user-friendly CBD website that will be device responsive and aligned with themes of Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The design concepts should also align with United Nations branding and the branding of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Work will be done under the overall guidance of Acting Director of the Implementation Services Division and the Head of the Capacity Building and Knowledge Management Unit and under the direct supervision of Information Management Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Secretariat has identified the following specific tasks and activities to be addressed as part of this project:

1. Create design specifications for organization’s website and its associated components that includes: a. Layout of home Page of CBD website and its associated components i. Landing pages of subsections ii. Content list pages iii. Content container pages iv. Search page v. Web forms vi. Discussion forums vii. Header and footer element b. Information menu system of the CBD website i. Primary menu system of the website ii. Secondary and tertiary menu systems of the website iii. Collapsible/expandable menu c. Key Subsites/Portals/Platforms i. Conference subsite ii. BBI, EBSA and other

2. Create high quality wireframes, prototypes and design mock-ups for responsive web interface.

3. Design and create required visual components of the site such as buttons, icons, pop-ups-windows, widgets, website screens, form elements, etc.

4. Collaborate closely with the information officers, IT team, and other key stakeholders to translate user stories and business requirements into well calibrated and pixel perfect design documents.

5. Participate in the full software development cycle (analysis, design, testing, launch).

6. Create style guides, design systems and other design documents.

7. Provide design support through the development process, ensuring that the final product aligns with the design vision.

8. Document all the work accomplished and transfer knowledge at the end of the contract.

Specific priorities and activities will be decided by the Information Management Officer supervising the project.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a university degree is desirable. Areas of study in arts, graphic design, user interface design, etc. is desirable.

Working Experience:

At least five years of experience in web interface design is required.

Solid understanding of the concepts of user experience (UX), user interface design principles and conceptual design is desirable.

Expert knowledge in HTML, CSS and JavaScript/TypeScript is desirable.

Expert knowledge in design tools such as Adobe Indesign/Figma or equivalent is desirable.

Knowledge of Bootstrap, AngularJS/Vue/React, jQuery and REST API is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.

Additional Information Local recruitment. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have permission to work in Canada.

Important note: Individual contractor must be available to work onsite in the office of the CBD Secretariat in Montreal, Canada, if need be, including to participate physically in team meetings. Commuting/travelling costs from and to the Secretariat are not reimbursed.
