Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located within the Field Engineering Office in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with duty station, Kinshasa. The Carpenter reports to the Head Building Management Unit in Field Engineering Office (FEO).

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will perform the following duties: 1. Design, construct and repair cabinets, chairs, benches, partitions, flooring doors and window frames, and other types of wood products; 2. Receive and read engineering work order requests, carryout technical assessment, blueprints or sketches for a particular job; 3. Estimate material requirements and tools or equipment; 4. Set up and operate woodworking tools to cut form and finish material; 5. Carryout carpentry works in strict compliance with drawings; 6. Erect or dismantle structures including roofing or siding and prefabricated buildings; 7. Repair and/or refinish walls and structures, roofs and drywalls and ensure efficient use of salvage materials; 8. Repair door locks and windows; 9. Lubricate and maintain carpentry specific equipment, while using and caring for power tools; 10. Install wood and/or metal parts, glass or replacing broken glass, floor and ceiling tiles; 11. Prepare scaffolding as required such as roughing in and finishing carpentry, painting and refinishing objects, walkways and floor slabs, etc.; 12. Perform cabinet works and repairing furniture; 13. Ensure that all joints are properly and securely tight; 14. Provide inputs for annual carpentry acquisition planning; 15. Perform other related duties as required.

Work Experience

A minimum of three (3) years of practical experience is required. Knowledge to evaluate all kinds of wood, Formica, glue and the ability to select the best quality of tools and equipment is required. Experience in UN peacekeeping or other field operations is desirable. Experience in carrying out technical assessment is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in French (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of English is desirable.
