Job Description

TITLE: Career Programs Intern LOCATION: El Cajon/ Remote START DATE: May 2023 DURATION: Minimum of 3 months; 10 hours per week. opportunities to extend internship term.

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: Career Programs intern will assist the Career Development Coordinators in providing career development services to refugee clients who are interested in earning industry recognized certifications in fields such as Allied Healthcare, I.T. and more. In addition, Career Program interns will help Career Program staff in delivering individualized relicensing services by gathering information on various required steps for obtaining a license in a specific industry track. Interns will also assist Career Program staff in offering on-site literacy and workforce preparation activities and classes at the IRC, so that students are improving their literacy and work readiness skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES: · Support Career Program staff with in-class instruction · Work individually with clients one-on-one with resume review, job searching, networking opportunities, and interview prep · Assist Career Development staff with a variety of projects and admin needs i.e. data entry, filing, and database quality assurance · Provide one-on-one technical assistance sessions to participants with limited English proficiency · Develop guides and resources in multiple professional fields as needed · Assist training staff with other tasks as assigned

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Student will increase their knowledge of refugee population in San Diego and challenges they face specifically in workforce. 2. Interns will learn how to render direct service to clients regarding employment 3. Interns will learn about teaching ESL population and their challenges 4. Interns will gain insight and knowledge about different industries 5. Interns will receive training and familiarity in data entry and data analysis

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS: · Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program focused on Education, International Relations/Development, Social Work, or related field · Excellent organization skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, empathetic, and ability to effectively collaborate · Ability to use basic functions of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office programs · English fluency required · A strong interest in working with a diverse, low-income population · Proactive, motivated and flexible; able to remain calm and adapt within a fast-paced work environment · Ability to take direction (written and oral) and to complete tasks independently and in timely manner · Language skills a plus (Farsi/Dari, Kiswahili, Arabic, Burmese or Russian strongly preferred) · Volunteer experience with a non-profit preferred

This position reports to Senior Career Development Specialist.
