GENERAL BACKGROUND

WHO ARE WE?

The Danish Refugee Council assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe: we provide emergency aid, fight for their rights, and strengthen their opportunities for a brighter future. We work in conflict-affected areas, along the displacement routes, and in the countries where refugees settle. In cooperation with local communities, we strive for responsible and sustainable solutions. We work toward successful integration and – whenever possible – for the fulfilment of the wish to return home. The Danish Refugee Council was founded in Denmark in 1956 and has since grown to become an international humanitarian organization with more than 7,000 staff and 8,000 volunteers. Our vision is a dignified life for all displaced. All of our efforts are based on our value compass: humanity, respect, independence and neutrality, participation, and honesty and transparency.

DRC's programming in Serbia began in 1993 and grew out of DRC's comprehensive interventions in response to the large-scale forced migration resulting from the Yugoslav wars and the urgent need to work with refugees and IDPs. DRC’s latter actions included extensively working with persons from a mixed migration context, asylum seekers, and persons fleeing conflict in Ukraine and with other persons affected by displacement, with a geographical catchment area of DRC programs encompassing the entire territory of the Republic of Serbia including the municipalities targeted by the project. DRC has accumulated extensive experience in livelihoods programmes including vocational trainings, business counselling, income generation grants and mentoring programmes in Serbia with different target groups. Further, DRC was heavily involved with non-formal education in mixed migration context since 2016, when direct implementation started, that later developed into several programmatic activities aimed at raising individual skills and capacities, namely, support to formal education, lifelong learning competencies, vocational trainings, on-the-job trainings, as well as direct support to employment. Additionally, in cooperation with the health authorities, both on the national level with the Ministry of Health and Institute for Public Health (Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut) and on the local level DRC through the local health centres, provided health care services as well as directly implemented health awareness raising programs in transit / reception / asylum centres in Serbia.
