• Master's degree in wildlife, biodiversity, environmental science, natural sciences, or related fields is required.
• Minimum of 10 years of professional technical experience in the field captive breeding is required.
• Knowledge of biodiversity and wildlife in Saudi Arabia is an asset.
• Experience working in West Asia is desirable.
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
• Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

Result of Service Development of a strategy for captive breeding and reintroduction centers including its assessment, benchmarking, and implementation for the National Centre for Wildlife.

Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting, Purpose, and Objective:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy is established at the West Asia Office within the framework of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between UNEP and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The expert will report to the Project Manager at UNEP West Asia Office.

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the National Centre for Wildlife (NCW) and the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Consultant will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Provide technical input and guidance on the enhancement and application of captive breeding protocol and release in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia managed by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW) at its captive breeding facilities. 2. Set breeding priorities, targets and produce a plan for the future conservation of the captive bred species, across its natural range within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 3. Technical inputs in the enhancement of captive breeding protocol and its application to ensure the best breeding results for the species’ conservation. 4. Establish a national scheme for registry of captive breeding program and introduction. 5. Develop a national restocking plan to enhance viability of reintroduced antelopes. 6. Review the existing captive breeding program, tools, facilities, and results and provide expert review on the program. 7. Provide expert review on the ex-situ management of the breeding facilities. 8. Provide on-the-job mentoring coaching and training for NCW staff on the application of best practices on captive breeding schemes, animal care and conservation translocation. 9. Provide technical training on the existing international tools and databases relevant to captive breeding and reintroduction of antelopes.

Outputs and Deliverables: 1. A workplan for the captive breeding for the 12 months including specific time-lined targets. 2. An inception report on the captive breeding protocol in Saudi Arabia. 3. Technical guidelines and scientific reports of captive breeding. 4. Training manuals and courses for captive breeding. 5. Capacity building programme for National Centre for Wildlife. 6. Monthly and quarterly reports of captive breeding 7. Final report on captive breeding in Saudi Arabia.

Qualifications/special skills Master’s degree in wildlife, biodiversity, environmental science, natural sciences, or related fields is required. PHD is an asset. Minimum of 10 years of professional technical experience in the field captive breeding is required. Knowledge of biodiversity and wildlife in Saudi Arabia is an asset. Experience working in West Asia is desirable.

Languages Fluency in written and spoken English is required and knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
