Prepare and launch the Champions of the Earth cycle and World Environment Day

You have:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations or related area.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications is required.
  • Experience with the United Nations system is desirable.
  • Experience coordinating global campaigns is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required for this position.

Result of Service - The purpose of this consultancy is to prepare for the launch of the 2022 Champions of the Earth cycle and strategize the 2022 World Environment Day celebrations.

Expected duration The duration of this consultancy is 4 Months at level "B".

Duties and Responsibilities The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Communications Division communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide.

The Champions of the Earth award is the United Nation’s highest environmental honor, hosted by the UNEP. It recognizes outstanding leaders from government, civil society and the private sector whose actions have a transformative impact on the environment. Champions of the Earth inspire, defend mobilize and act to tackle the greatest environmental challenges of our time.

World Environment Day is the most prominent international day for environmental action. Since 1974, World Environment Day has been celebrated annually on 5 June. It engages governments, businesses, schools, celebrities, and millions of people around the world to focus on a pressing environmental issue. World Environment Day is a springboard for awareness-raising actions related to the annual theme.

The purpose of this consultancy is to prepare the launch of the Champions of the Earth cycle and World Environment Day in relation to the #GenerationRestoration in view of the public facing launch of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.

This position is located in the Public Advocacy and Communication Section, which oversees the organization’s public-facing advocacy campaigns.

Under the supervision of the Chief of Public Advocacy and communication section, the consultant will perform the following duties:

1. Launch UNEP’s Champions of the Earth cycle, including close collaboration related to the #GenerationRestoration campaign. 2. Ensure visibility for and advancement of UNEP's Champions of the Earth Programme as part of the follow up activities of World Environment Day through vibrant and impactful communication and storytelling on the issue of ecosystem restoration and other related areas to the #GenerationRestoration campaign.

Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in communications, journalism, international relations or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience: A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications is required. Experience with the United Nations system is desirable. Experience coordinating global campaigns is desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required.
